the F word

By now you have probably heard the situation between Radio 1 and the banning of the “F” word. If not, let me just inform you about the decision of Radio 1 to ‘bleep’ the word ‘faggot’ from the Christmas pop song, Fairytale of New York by the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl.
What is actually causing a bit of debate is the selective omission of the words faggot and slut while allowing the listeners to sing along other offensive words used by the song’s characters.
For some, this bleeping only accentuates the prejudice against some members of society, for others the act of bleeping is against freedom of creativity and for a very small minority the act is perfectly understandable as those two “awful, terrible, bad words” should not be played on the radio.

  • Mick  23 Dec 07 14:42,   by Mick My goodness, what a kerfuffle (that isn't a bad word unless R1 want to censor it). Well it is the season not to be jolly isn't it? With everyone seemingly banning the word 'Christmas' in case it offends non Christians, and statements of Christian faith being banned by British Airways; it seems a great idea to jump on the bandwagon. Well, they didn't seem to worry about it when the song came out 20 years ago did they? I am surprised that they haven't banned the word 'maggot' too, in case it offended juvenile flies or 'cars big as bars' in case it offended non-drivers or non-drinkers, or associated drinking with driving. What about love songs, in case non-heterosexuals didn't like them? Oh no, what have I said? Have I given good ol' Radio 1 more ammunition?????? I am sorry but it's just pathetic. I have always loved the Pogues, and all of their songs - whether someone didn't agree with their lyrics or not. At least this stupidity will ensure that the money comes rolling in this Christmas for a great band!
