Big Brother or Human Nature?

For some people the photographs of Spencer Tunick may not have any artistic meaning, however, for those of us participating on the photos, the meaning doesn’t rest on the images it resides in people’s behaviour.

Would it be the feelings of Big Brother that stops people from misbehaving or is it human nature outside the media and the journalistic eye?

18,000 people, naked, together and not one single type of abuse (not as far as myself and many others were aware of, anyway). You need to consider that Mexicans like to make nasty comments to anyone on a skirt at anytime, under any possible circumstances!

Nevertheless, when all of us were naked, we all became the same. Doesn’t really matter what was inside people’s mind at the time of the photos, what matters is the respect and great feelings of brotherhood and sisterhood surrounding the space. Not one person suffered from robbery (amazing!!!); not one person suffered from neither negative nor positive comments and not one person was ashamed of their bodies (hurray). What a great day!

At the very end, Mr. Tunick asked for men to put their clothes on and left only the women naked. At this moment is when must of us felt different. We felt as being objects of the male gaze; we felt abused and ashamed… Still, we went ahead and give a great ‘still performance’. At the end of the female photos all the guys clapped at us recognising our bravery and ‘disadvantaged’ position.
It was really great… we also beat the record of naked people gathered for the shots!

If you ever have the opportunity to assist to a shot from Spencer Tunick, I really hope you experience is as positive as the Mexican one!

Do you think that more people should take their clothes off in public places? Might it help us heal our general self-contempt?

  • Burffy  26 Oct 07 19:47,   by Burffy I did feel much better about my body (even if I am under diet know Mr. Green) But I was more impressed with the way in which 8,000 people behaved!
I also think we should do things that challenge general views of society. If getting naked on the street is a way to find out how respectful, decent and great we still are as humans, then yes, I think we should!

I do think the society need to have these little boosts of harmony even if they last no more than five hours!
