Why care

I don’t think (American) writers should go on strike demanding extra payment for what they do… That only shows how greedy the TV empires are.

I believe writers as well as all involve in the creation of a TV program should earn what they deserve without having to demand it; without having to incur to strikes or even go through the stress of loosing their jobs.
Writers and all of those who produce TV programs really should be so much better off; especially if technology facilitates the access of their work to consumers ‘any time, any where’.

If it were not for the great creativity (even if it is OFTEN not that great) and their commitment to their jobs, we viewers would have to deal with more Big-Brother type of programs. Why do we have to suffer like that?

TV Empires or those responsible should just hand over the royalties to each party even as a gesture of appreciation. Shame on them!!!

The story

Quote:
"I want to say I love my writers," she told her studio audience. "In honour of them today, I'm not going to do a monologue."

And in honour of them, there won’t be staged press conferences, says I.
The writers' union is seeking extra payments for their work when it is re-used on other platforms such as DVDs, the internet and mobile phones.
Last-ditch talks failed to resolve the dispute - the first since 1988, when industrial action lasted 22 weeks.
Studios have stockpiled dozens of movie scripts in the hope they can ride out the strike.
Interior filming of the Desperate Housewives episode took place on Tuesday as scheduled, though the noise outside may require portions of dialogue to be re-recorded.
Picketers used the show as an inspiration for their chants, which included the refrain "We write the story-a for Eva Longoria".

As a personal question, who is going to write the questions for supposed journalists on faked press conferences in the US?

  • Dalaigh  Staff reply 22 Nov 07 16:17,   by Dalaigh From what I understand, the issue really is "should the writers get paid at all when their work is used in the future?". And is it the media giants that are the greedy ones?

Just as musicians often get shafted by the recording labels, it appears its even worse for writers. From everything I have read, they aren't getting paid any royalties in the future for their works being reused in DVD and online media. More being more than nothing.

I understand some of my favourite shows are being cut this year as a result, so I'm not too happy about the strike (Heroes has only 11 episodes for season 2 instead of 22!!! - get a life you say), however I do understand why they are doing it in the first place.

anyway, I say take some of the money from the moguls and the overpaid actors and give it to those who actually come up with the stories in the first place.
