What it's all about
At the end of each academic year huge amounts of “rubbish” are left by students moving out, especially at halls of residences.A good proportion of this is not rubbish at all but perfectly good and usable items such as food, clothing, bedding, kitchenware and toiletries, that students either cannot physically carry or just no longer wish to be bother with. The vast majority could still be put to good use in the wider community, or sold on.
We want to establish a system to collect and sort these unwanted items at the end of the year and redistribute them to local charities and projects such as homeless shelters and reuse schemes. This will not only benefit those who receive the goods, but hopefully will also reduce the total amount of “rubbish” generated.
What's needed to make it a reality
*We need to develop links with local projects to determine what can be collected and where it can be used.* We need volunteers to help collect, sort and distribute items, and to promote the idea beforehand.
*Support from students, the university and Halls RAs.
* We need funding for the production of promotional material, collecting reciprocals and packaging, and transporting goods.
* A room for short term storage of goods whilst they are sorted.
