What it's all about

I want to organise a Campaign that will tackle this very serious issue on two fronts:
1: To provide clear preventative advice on personal safety
2: To provide a practical deterrent to vulnerable individuals

Advice:
I want to organise a marketing campaign to provide clear, easy to understand advice on personal safety relevant to young people. This will include:

Posters - to be displayed in the Students Union, on Campus and in the Halls of Residence.
E-mails - will be circulated in the weekly newsletter to the student community.
Fliers - outlining simple steps to take to safeguard yourself.

I will design the posters with the help of the other project leaders and I will also seek Police guidance on the content. All materials will have contact details of where to go for further information.

I want to display the posters in the Students Union, Halls of Residence and other public building. We also intend to have a presence at the Night Bus Central Pick-up Point that runs each Wednesday and Friday evening. For one month we intend to be at the Pick-up Point and hand-out fliers and talk to people about personal safety issues.

Deterrent:
I want to purchase Police approved personal safety alarms that have been proven to assist as deterrents when personal safety is threatened. Even if the alarm is never used, those that carry them have reported that they feel safer and less vulnerable than when they are without one, and this helps greatly with confidence building.

What's needed to make it a reality

I have spoken with the Students Union and they would be happy for this campaign to take place on their premises.

I have also sought advice from Loughborough Police Constabulary.

I have got a team of volunteers ready to help over the month this project will run.

All I now need is the funding to enable me to produce the posters/fliers and to purchase the personal safety alarms.

  • Avatar Helen 13:38, 01 February 2008 This sounds like a really good campaign that will rasie awareness of personal safety amongst students. Prehaps you could also try and get funding to hold self defence classes and hand out rape alarms to students.
  • Avatar zw!tch 14:46, 01 February 2008 Your idea tackles a very serious issue - students are notorious for making bad choices about their personal safety - especially when a bit sozzled!

Because you are a student at Loughborough University you can access up to £750 to turn your idea into a reality. Loughborough University is one of 15 Universities who are taking part in the scheme where you can access funding, training and support from your Junction49 staff member (Carolyn) to help you get your project up and running. She'll be in touch with you soon to start helping you develop your project.

    Thought you might be interested in this also;

NATIONAL CRIMEBEAT is a charity that encourages young people aged between the ages of 5 and 25 to get involved and create safer communities. Crimebeat schemes offer a great chance for young people to show what they can do and how their project can help them and others in their area. Projects can be of wide range and interest, and have in the past included helping older people make their homes safer, a bus pass scheme on school buses to reduce disruptive behavior, support and counseling groups at school, stranger danger projects, drug and alcohol information and advice. The list goes on.

Projects have in the past taken the form of music CDs, video productions, environmental clear up solutions, drama presentations and many other innovative ways of getting a message across or showing positive action.

Each local Crimebeat scheme encourages groups of young people to develop their ideas on crime reduction and turn them into successful projects. A large number of young people have become involved in these projects and they in turn pass on benefits of their work to their peers and the wider community. Young people are solving problems that matter to them in their communities.

Most Crimebeat Schemes give grants of up to £500 to assist in setting up projects, or they operate a competition with prize money available to the winning groups

The contact details for your local CrimbBeat are here http://www.national-crimebeat.org.uk/leicestershire_rutland.htm. Maybe you could see if they could also give you some funding.

Let us know how you get on!
