What it's all about
M U S I C - More Understanding for Schoolkids In the Community
My proposal is an idea which will hopefully bring some young people into the idea of working in the broadcasting and journalism career path by using a local radio station to promote to them that it is an accessible pathway which involves music. Young people today are very interested in schemes which use music as a pathway to a career and this project aims to highlight the other careers associated with music and radio. It aims to highlight awareness of the accessibility of this potential career and show them that they do not have to necessarily perform songs, become a DJ or a producer in order for them to become successful in this career. It will hopefully engage young people in the idea of furthering themselves and widening their knowledge of careers. In addition to this if this scheme is successful it will hopefully provide a useful outlet for young people to spend their time in, and in addition to this, potentially give them ideas for their future. I am currently in talks with the local radio station Kemet fm which can relate a lot to the young people in Radford and hopefully provide an outlet for promotion and widening participation. Hopefully, with the backing of the local radio station the young people could work towards producing or presenting a radio show.
Outcomes of the project:
I will hopefully be able to engage young people in some careers guidance in an informal way which will hopefully help towards them having more fun and enjoying the experience, while at the same time it being educational. There will hopefully be some valuable outcomes such as joining college courses which would not before have been applied for and gaining work experience. The project could take place at weekends but the best time would probably be a half term or a summer holiday. However the project could be continued during the weekends prior to the holidays.
Target Audience would be:
Young people aged 12-16 (Mainly Secondary school age)
Young people who do not have an idea of their future career possibilities
Young people who are socially excluded due to anti social behaviour
Young people looking for something useful to do with their time
What's needed to make it a reality
Transport costs for yourself and your volunteers (perhaps if they are going to look around radio stations/tv stations)
Refreshments or if you want to provide lunch at your training
Cost of renting equipment
Cost of posters to promote project
Cost of certificates

Your project seems well thought out, and because you are a student at Nottingham University you can access up to £750 to turn your idea into a reality. Nottingham University is one of 15 Universities who are taking part in the scheme where you can access funding, training and support from your Junction49 staff member (Catie Smith) to help you get your project up and running.
Hope it goes well!
Your idea sounds fab! As you're a student at Trent University I can help support you. I'm in on Thursdays and Fridays and look forward to seeing you soon. Let me know when you've got a spare hour to come in for a chat.
