What it's all about

Hello, my name is Heather and I work with a team called Twenty Four Hours. There are 8 of us, who all attend The University of Derby studying events management. We want to put an event on, in Derby that creates money and awareness of the lasting effects of drug abuse.

Ok so here’s our big idea ~

It has become a sad reality that the media advertise the rock and roll industry as
Everyone knows people like Pete Doherty and Amy Winehouse, but is this because of their music talents or their media exposure for drug use. Wanna be a Rockstar ~ is too show people of all ages, that rock and roll ~ doesn’t go hand in hand with drugs.

The event is planned to take place in Derby city centre in a venue called First Floor, on the Friday 25th April 2008. We feel that this venue is well located, and practically suits our rock and roll vibe. Please feel free to have a look at their website ~ www.firstfloorclub.com

So the event itself, Local bands from the area will play a 20min set including their own songs and as a twist ~ covering their Rock Idols. Each band will play the songs; they wished they wrote for example the undertones - Teenage kicks. This twist will make the event... better than just a gig. With the audience participation, the best cover band will be crowd; the winner of RockStar 2008! Winning a Great prize ~ fingers cross an opportunity to broadcast their single on RamFM (local radio station)

What's needed to make it a reality

At the moment we really need help funding the Marketing side of the event ~ For flyers and posters. Also, just any help from people who have tried similar events ~ Just wants to give us a few tips?!

This sounds great - how exactly do you plan to use the event to show that drug use and rock and roll don't always go together?

I've organised a band night before - make sure you've got all your equipment sorted including lights and a PA and someone to look after them both who knows what they are doing! You should find that there are people willing to do this as a volunteer - we did pretty easily!

Since you're at the University of Derby and it's one of the unis Junction49's working with in partnership you can apply for up to £750 funding to run your project. Your volunteer support officer (Alex) can help you access funding, training and support.
