What it's all about

Moving to a new city, away from your family and friends can be a traumatic experience for anyone. With this project it is my intention to help make the transition for both national and international students as easy as possible.
With this project I intend to help people with this transition by providing a friendly and welcoming service which will provide the individuals with the basic knowledge of the Newcastle area, which will help them feel more at home...
I plan to set up visits to various locations from major, local land marks to low priced supper markets using public transport to familiarise people with the city and how to get around. This is also a great opportunity for students both new and old to make new friends.
From talking with various mature students and students with young children I have found that they feel both the university and the students union could have done more to accommodate them when they first started the course. For this reason I intend to set up a coffee morning/afternoon to run several times over the start of the course targeted directly at these students.
I believe this project will be of great benefit to new students, as well as the volunteers that take part and the University as a whole.

What's needed to make it a reality

Firstly, I plan to carry out more research using the method of questionnaires to determine what current students would have found useful when they first started university.
Funding...
For travel, advertisements, refreshments, admission charges (subsidised)
As many volunteers that want to help, as the more we have the better the project will be.

  • Dalaigh  Staff reply 20 Feb 08 20:51,   by Dalaigh Hi Graham. How's the research going? Do you think the key to the service is the personal touch you're offering or the information. I'm really just curious. Wink Keep us updated.
  •   20 Feb 08 23:11,   by Graham I am in the process of seeing whether i can view an international questionaire that has been done by the university, i am also busy forming a questionaire for the national students. I think its a bit of both, if i am able to offer a friendly service at the same time as providing the relivent info people will need, it will make peoples initial weeks at univesity much more pleasent, fun and easyer. I will keep you updated on my research.
    Very Happy
