What it's all about

I am currently working as a student associate in Highbury fields girls school and my job is to use my personal higher education experience and encourage young girls from all backgrounds to consider higher education. I have realised that speaking to the girls, carrying out activities that help them understand the necessity of further education is very important.

In India the drop out rate of children, especially girls , is very high. Parents are unaware that the constitution of India advocates free and compulsory education of children below the age of 14 and thus more than half the population in India is illiterate and this leads to other problems such as child labour, poverty, etc.

I have seen young children, especially girls, on the streets in India begging for money. I actually spoke to them and asked them why they dont go to a school. One of them said to me..because I'm a girl..Most of them have to drop out after primary education, as parents prefer educating and paying fees for their brothers or any male in the house.

Girls are made to work as maids and servants at a very young age. I would like to do something similar like I do at Highbury Fields school, encourage girls to study for a good future and promote the concept of learn and earn.

What's needed to make it a reality

I know a few more students from Middlesex University who are ready to help me on this project. Through this project I would get an opportunity to go to India again and visit various schools. If I get some funding (750 pounds from Junction 49) which is 60,000 Rupees, a few parents might agree to send their girls for higher education as it would be possible for me to get around 200 girls admission for further education in India and this may help them change their lives!

*Admission fees for Higer education in India for girls is around 200 Rupees.

As you are a student at middlesex University, one of 15 Univeristies working in conjunction with Junction 49, you may be able to access up to £750 to turn your idea into a project. I will be in touch via email to arrange a time to meet with you to discuss your idea further.
  • Avatar zw!tch 17:04, 21 February 2008 What an interesting project. I was volunteering in India a while ago and when we spoke to the teachers in the school we were based at they said the same thing - that girls dropping out is a big problem!

Where abouts in India are you planning to go?
