What it's all about

The UCLU Young Writers Society wanted an opportunity to encourage others in the community to be more involved in creative writing, whether through writing creatively themselves or listening to the work of others (which is what our fortnightly meetings aim to do for our members.)

We decided to aim our project at children as we felt they would probably value the experience more.

Having liased with both Nadia Cole, our Junction 49 co-ordinator, and the deputy head of a local primary school in Islington we have finally decided to run a weekly creative writing club for 6-8 children age 10-11. Once the club starts we're going to let the children choose a loose theme which they will then use to compose some pieces of creative writing which they may then also illustrate. These will then be published in a small volume, one copy for every classroom and the school library.

What's needed to make it a reality

We don't really need that much to get started as all the ideas are coming from the children's heads! But we hope to get some squash and biscuits for them to keep them fuelled-up, and we hope to provide some stationary to make the session even more fun.

I think eventually it would also be lovely to be able to offer a contribution towards the cost of publishing the volume as a gift to the school for saying thank you for having us come in and run our club.

The children, and you, and the other volunteer student-leaders, will have loadsa fun and you can use the Junction49 funding that your project has been granted towards refreshments, printing up pupils' work at the end and pens/paint etc. Who knows you may be inspiring the next J.K.Rowlings!
I'll continue to offer you support along the way. Good luck.

  •   09 Apr 08 20:29,   by ichoosedreams This is exactly what I'm up to at the moment! The idea of having a volume of work written by the children is my favourite part of the project - I can't WAIT to get started on it... and we don't start out workshops until the 15th!

If you've any advice for me I would be MOST greatful, especially for warm-up activities. This is the department I am most lacking in at the moment.

    Hope everything's going well!
