What it's all about

I am organising a beach litterpick to Seaham on Thursday 5th June. This will give 50 students at Durham University the change to partake in environmantal work on Seaham beach. There will be a coach taking students from the centre of Durham to the beach and back. This will be an opportunity for studetns to litterpick for part of the day then have some time to relax and play beach games. This will be a great end of year celebration for all the great volunteering our students have done this year and will be a chance for new people to get involved in volunteering and meet new people.

What's needed to make it a reality

I will be organising this event as the Junction 49 Volunteer Support Officer at Durham University and the funding provided will pay for the coach to transport the students to the beach.

I helped out an on beach clean a while back...it was pretty satisfying - it's really easy to see the difference a group can make in just one day!

  • Avatar grangey 18:48, 07 April 2008 Great idea, nice to see people caring about the environment. You'll need to work hard to recruit volunteers though. We joined forces with Newcastle city council, national wildlife trust, and a few other environmental concerned groups who where really nice to talk to and had a few idea they were looking to start. it was an a similar event but with Northumbria students, project Clean the Dene, but on the day we only managed to recruit 3 students although the weather wasn't the best, Snowing , either and it was out of term time. Hope the event is a better success for you.
Don't know the mechanics of how the volunteer office's run at universities but perhaps a inter uni project, "Durham, Northumbria, and Newcastle" could be created for the good of the environment, what do you think, something to investigate?
  • Avatar Jo & Andy 16:40, 09 April 2008 Hi do you work with Northumbria Uni. i think we have been in touch with some other uni's and they may be coming along on the same day. If you have a contact at your uni I could email them more details about the day.
    Thanks for posting
