What it's all about

The Centre is based in Birmingham. The lady who runs the centre is trully inspirational and has a strong vision to help the Birmingham Somali Community, namely women, single mothers, children, the elderly and disabled. I found it impossible not to get involved because of how passionate she is. Their aim is to build bridges between Somali women and children and the wider Birmingham public. At the moment it is just one lady that is voluntarily running the project along with a few other volunteers, so I am trying to help out however I can. Although it is a centre for Somali women, they are working closely with similar centres aimed at supporting other nationalities, to try to break down barriers.

In the past they have been able to run a homework club for children and young people as well as educational visits to local interesting sites, but they have now run out of funding, and because there is just one lady running the project, she is finding it difficult to pursue futher funding opportunities, and so this is an area that I am also helping out with.

I really feel that I would love to give the Centre a bit of a makeover, as this would really help the project to become more sustainable. It may also mean that some of the rooms could be rented out, to provide some extra revenue. Although I am trying to 'blag' things such as paint and various bits and bobs, some money would really help out with this project. My aim is to then recruit friends and family as well as people from the centre, to help out on a day of volunteering, to transform the centre! It would be fantastic if we could achieve this first and then I would carry on volunteering with the Centre to try to extend what the centre is currently providing, which is mainly advice sessions and occasional trips for women at the moment. We would also love to set up Sewing classes for the women, and I am also trying to find people that no longer use or need their sewing machines and could donate them! There are many many other ideas that we have; setting up a Community Cafe, cultural sessions for young people so that they can understand their heritage and background as well as getting the homework club running again. Newly arrived children often find school very difficult due to a different language and system, many Somali children did not have schooling before coming to England, being able to have extra support in culturally senstitive surroundings would be a real support and it would also be beneficial to volunteers also.

I get such a buzz from working with this project, and seeing just how much the Centre is already benefiting the local community, and also seeing the huge potential it has and this is why I am getting so involved with it, and trying to help out as much as I can.

If anyone has any ideas of things that may help us, then I'd love to hear them!

What's needed to make it a reality

Ideally some funding would really help with ensuring that the makeover can happen. Alternatively any advice about other places to find small pots of money, donated items, or any tips about going about these ideas would be really appreciated!

This sounds like a really great project - well deserving of a helping hand (or purse!), and it also sounds like you've all got some sound ideas for how to develop this further.

I'd be interested to know how you heard about this project in the first place?

You could try Birmingham freecycle for a sewing machine - http://www.freecycle.org/group/United%20Kingdom/West%20Midlands/Birmingham and maybe even some other bits and bobs you're looking for!

As for funding...your project is eligible to win-funding from our Junction49 pot! More details are here . You can also apply for funding from the lottery - have a look at what's available here .

Is there any other advice you'd like in particular?

Do I need to enter my details again to pitch for the funding?! It would be absolutely great if there was any way that Junction 49 could support us. If it's not possible to help though, do you know of any other grants that might be available?! I heard that B&Q had a small grants system for 'green' project ideas....there is possibly room for tubs and grow bags etc, but no garden as such, but I want to focus on the makeover project first!

I'm registered with Freecycle, so I'm keeping an eye out for sewing machines....but I dont have a car at the moment, so would be difficult to pick things up. I've rung quite a few local churches, and asked if they'd mind putting a note in any newsletter they have, to see if anyone has a spare one. I've now got 3!! But would be great to get a few more. We'll just have to try to find a way of getting them PAT Tested too, but one thing at a time!

I've already asked for the Lottery to send me a 'Reaching Communities' Application Form. But it seems like this one is quite competitive, so I'm going to see which other ones it might fit into. I've also got the Awards for All application form, which is a bit more simple. I'm just a bit anxious as I've not really completed funding application forms before, but it'll be good experience for me, Hani, the lady that runs the centre, has brilliant ideas, sometimes it's just a case of me finding it easier as English is my first language. Hani is a full-time volunteer, and I think it'd be absolutely great to try and get funding so that she could actually get paid for the work that she is doing. She has been on quite a few sort of charity/voluntary training courses at weekends (so that she can continue running the centre in the week) and she has to take her 2 daughters to the college and stay over in accommodation whilst she does the course! A very committed lady!

I'm currently a full-time volunteer for CSV - Community Service Volunteers, on a project called Agents4Change, for which I've been getting other 16-25 year olds volunteering; that's how I heard about Junction 49, as we're kind of doing similar things. The only thing is that we don't really have a budget behind us, and I'm also leaving in a couple of weeks, to move onto paid employment! wahoo! Although it's hopefully going to be a part-time role, so that I can continue to be involved quite heavily with the Somali Centre. There's no way that we'll manage to set up everything before I leave CSV, so I am definitely going to carry on once I leave, as a volunteer. I heard about the Centre through one of my volunteers, who's currently on a gap year, and volunteering at the Centre. I was immediately excited about the Centre, as in the past I gave loads of time to volunteering with young refugees and asylum seekers, with a Save the Children Project. When I first joined, it was really small, and we kind of all felt like we were in it together, and it has since grown phenomenally, which has been fantastic to see; I get the same buzz from volunteering at the Somali Support Centre, seeing what an absolutely wonderful job Hani is doing, and also how much potential there is. Julia, the gap year volunteer, is also really excited, and is helping to try and pull bits and bobs together for a potential makeover. Is that ok about the CSV stuff? As although some of the work at the Somali Centre fits into my role at CSV, it is largely as a volunteer that I am doing it.

    Sorry about the longwinded message!

Sounds like you're doing a grand job! Don't worry about your role at CSV - especially since that's voluntary as well Smile

We'll get back in touch with you soon to ask for a detailed budget and list of current needs for the project. In the meantime have a look over the criteria on the win funding page ...

Good luck with the sewing machine hunt! Very Happy

  • zw!tch  Staff reply 04 Apr 08 15:53,   by zw!tch Hi Helen,

I have some good news for you - our judges have discussed your application and decided we can award you some Junction49 funds!

Your next step is to decide on your proposed budget for the makeover and post it up here on Junction49. Depending on how much you think that'll cost, you could also send us a budget for setting up the Community Cafe, cultural sessions for young people or the homework club. We can provide £300 but could possibly provide more if you can justify it in your budget breakdown.

Please can you also email a contact phone number (in fact ideally a mobile and landline) to help@junction49.co.uk?

Please just let us know what support you need? Ask any questions and we'll do our best to help...

Hope to hear from you soon!

    Cheers,

    Zoë
