What it's all about

Students could get together and beginning perhaps with a petition, but escalating all the way up to classic sixties style sit-ins could call on their school or college authorities to switch to 100% green energy. If young people were able to make the education authorities make this switch --imagine what a message it would send to the politicans and the public about our passion and vision, as well as the tangible effect it would have on ournational emission levels.

What's needed to make it a reality

I need a few people across a few campuses and schools to say they are up for it. It could happen one classroom at a time. We could write a manifesto together, and start to get other students to support it.

This sounds like a great idea Smile

Are you studying yourself at the moment? Do you know that your school/college/uni doesn't use a green energy provider at the moment? 'Cos I reckon your first step is to find out who they use and who is in charge of making that decision!

Once you've got that info I agree that a petition is probably the best way to start to get your request across. You'll then be able to request a meeting where you can present your petition...

The size of your challenge will depend on how big an instiution you're at - I'm sure it'll be a bigger challenge at a uni than a school!

If you're at uni then do you know people at other unis who went to your school/college who might want to start this where they are now? Let me know where you are and I'll see if I know anyone who'd want to get involved!

I've found an article with details about funding available to schools who want to become more environmentally friendly, have a gander at it! http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2005/oct/20/energy.schools

There are also quite a few examples of projects in schools where they've built their own renewable sources and are now even selling energy back to the national grid in some cases! http://education.guardian.co.uk/pictures/0,8552,1595002,00.html

My mind is running away with itself now and imagining solar panels and wind turbines Razz

Let us know how you go!

  • Evie  23 Nov 07 17:22,   by Evie oooooooo I think that's a great idea, and it's good way to meet new like-minded people at your school or uni and learn new skills too!
  • Lizard  27 Nov 07 13:11,   by Lizard I'm a member of Green Club at Silwood Park (which is a campus of Imperial College), and we were talking about this the other day. Unfortunately the problem is that any decisions like that have to go through the main campus at South Kensington, so everything takes ages and gets bogged down in loads of beuracracy. But we're going to try!
