Idea: They said 'never again'

What it's all about

I would like to put on an exhibition for Holocaust memorial day. The theme for the day is Imagine - remember, reflect, react. I think remembering atrocites such as the Holocaust is important for our present and future as these issues such as racism still occur in our own communities and the wider world. We need to raise awareness as I think this is the best way of tackling such prejudices.

I would use local artists and maybe schools to make art to remember the past, reflect on the present and react to create a better future.

I would also like to have events run within the exhibition. I'm not sure what they would be maybe dissucusions and guest speakers on issues to do with these topics.

My idea for the name of the exhibition they said 'never again' refers to after the holocaust the international community said 'never again' but still such atrocities are happening in the world and no one is doing enough about it.

What's needed to make it a reality

A venue that would have the space to put up artwork and room to hold other events that is in the city centre. Money to pay for venue and publicity.

I think that your idea sounds amazing!

Because you are a student at Nottingham University you can access up to £750 to turn your idea into a reality. As you know Nottingham University is one of 15 Universities who are taking part in the scheme where you can access funding, training and support from me (your Junction49 staff member) to help you get your project up and running.

    I'll be in touch soon!
  • Avatar Angie 22:54, 01 December 2007 Hey everyone,

Just to let u know how we are getting on with the exhibition. Firstly had a bit of trouble recruiting artisits but after sending many emails and putting up many posters i've learnt the best way to get artists involved is to personally approch them, then they lead to other artists etc.. networking. Emails and posters only got the people who have worked on the subject before interested.
We had our first proper art meeting the other day and it was quite exciting the ideas that came out. Lots of people want to make films installations so maybe thinking of holding a short film night within the exhibition, not sure yet.

Theres still lots to do, making sure these artists are making the work and there is enough to fill the 2 venues we've organised. Planning how we are going to lay it out, sorting the events....

well i'll keep u all up to date.

After going around talking to people about the exhibition and a few meetings, we now have the artist we need. We also have some MA artist to help us curate the exhibition.

At a meeting with the artist we came to a few problems.

Firstly the artist thought they could not do a subject such as the holocaust justise as they had no experience or connection to it. We assured them by telling them this is the reason we are putting the exhibition on for them to go through the process of thinking about the holocaust and how it effects them today. For the vistors to the exhibition to see the artists thought processes through the art will make the vistors more easily relate to the work. We will state this in the advertised blurb.

The other problem was we wanted a little more than just the art we wanted a little bit of fact to back up the art but the fine artists did not like this idea. They said you can't mix an art exibition with a fact exhibition it's either one or the other. We are thinking a lot of the people that walk into the gallery will not know much about the holocaust so we will need that fact. We have settled on having quotes/poems and images dotted around the art work. Then this won't take away from the art work it will just give it more meaning.
Another worry i have is the gallery space is quite big and informal. When i've seen art work there before the art work has not been the main attraction as there is other things distracting from the walls in the room. We are trying to make the space atomospheric by using music and sounds as well as projections and lighting if we can.

Hope that made sense. Sorry about all my grammer and spelling mistakes

It sounds like its going really well.

Are you planning on using your photos which you were taking in December of students lying in a pile representing the genocide in Sudan? It would be great if you could load it up on here for people to see.

Well done for getting your artist! That's a great achievment to have got them interested and involved.

I know what you mean about the Art Organisation's space but I think using light and sound is a great idea to create more of a womph factor.

For the film installations do you need to get a projector? Do you know how to get hold of one. If you need one it might be worth having a chat to the council - as you're doing them a favour with your exhibition in the council house maybe they would have a projectior you could borrow? (I know that the youth service are planning on projecting films onto the side of the council house later this year but I don't know if the council own this or they will have to rent one)

Well done for all your hard work. I look forward to hearing how your artist is getting on!
