What it's all about
Because it provides opportunity for local children and parents to be physically active on a regular basys and it fills a a gap in what is available for young children under 6. It Also gives opportunity to local people to meet and interact and brings different people closer together. This project benefits parents and children alike because it gives both the chance to be with other people in the local community, to have fun and socialize.
What's needed to make it a reality
######### What's being done #########
This idea came about because as a mother of a young child i realised that there wasnt much available for young children to do, most activities already on offer usually target over 6 year-olds or do not include anything physical at all. Young toddlers and children do have a lot of energy and will bennefit from an environment where they can play and interact with other children. I started out by researching online tying to find out if and where activities for young children were available, costs to parents and frequency, after i found out that not much was on offer for younger children i strated contacting my local council and people/organizations in my local area that promoted projects for kids, i also contacted several halls to find out how much they costed and check if i could get discounts to set up my project and offer it to parents free. The main problems i had at the begining were to find a hall, to find funding which i qualified for. I also had to get my head round loads of admin work, sorting out paperwork to set up parents for sports, reading all the info on the various important aspects of being an organization, filling up paperwork, application forms .
######### How it started #########
Its basically run by me with help from parents. I am trying to get as many parents as i can involved in the actual running of parents for sports but so far there are a hand full of us that organize activities but we do have a few 'loyals' that turn up to out evey session. We meet every other saturday at the hall where h lay out different acitivies for the kids, all parents are encouraged to play and help smaller children as a way to motivate them to get involved. The sessions themselves last for about 1hour and 30n minutes. During the week i set time aside to organise and plan what iam going to do at each session, as well as time off for marketting, researching and admin. At the very start i can say i used to spent most of my free time on this because i was trying to understand how everyting worked, now i spent a couple of hours a day looking things up, contacting people maintaining the website, etc.
######### More #########
A very importatnt aspect of this project is to take it outdoors. We had a one day fun day at a local park and the reaction from the community was very good, turn out was excelent despite the threat of rain. I want do take advantadge of the good weather to do more outdoor events as they attract a large number of different people. Our insurance already covers outdoor events and we have a very good relation with the local council. For this event the only hick up was trying to get contribution from local supermarkets for fruits and refreshments as we did not want to charge parents.
