What it's all about
Young people with special educational needs do not have the opportunity to socialise much with others in the community.
What's needed to make it a reality
5 of us decided to set up a youth club called Teen Seen. The youth club is held at Kirkam Youth Base every Tuesday for young people aged 13-25 years to give them a place to meet and have fun. The youth club runs weekly from 6pm -9pm.
From our uni course we went on placement at a school for young people with disabilities, whilst talking to them, it became clear they didn’t do much after school or didn’t feel comfortable taking part in activities that were available within the area.
Therefore we decided to make contact with people and organisations to discuss whether it was possible to arrange a venue or set something up where young people with disabilities / special educational needs could get together, communicate, socialise and have a good time.
The youth club has been very successful, we have organised trips including bowling and going to a restaurant to eat, which all the members enjoyed participating in. We have also set up art and creative workshops for some of the members to take part in.
