What it's all about
Walk4Darfur is an event which raises awareness about what is happening in Darfur. It allows individuals to display solidarity with the Darfur ethnic cleansing survivors living in the UK, while recognising that there is on going suffering in Darfur.
The event's secondary aim is to raise the issue of asylum which the Darfuris are subject to in the UK. Darfuris are here to seek protection because where they come from is not safe, most of them when they get here live in the streets, with out proper care. Recently the Home Office has been sending Darfuris back to Khartoum under the assumption that it is safe to do so as the fightiing is happening in a different region of the country. this is not the case as those who are sent back have been tortured.
I want to do a walk4Darfur in nottingham on the 25th of November to raise awareness and get people to sign postcards targeting their MPs to act on their behalf to protect Darfuris.
What's needed to make it a reality
Need money for printing, leaflets, expenses for speakers,
I will need permision for protest.

As you know Nottingham Univeristy is one of 15 Universities taking part in a new scheme where you can access money of up to £750 and get support with your project.

This sounds like a fantastic idea! You are absolutely right of course; the media have not given the necessary coverage to the realities of the conflict in Darfur which means that anything that we can do to raise awareness is most positive! Have you made any progress on gaining permission to protest? I have spoken to Nottingham County Council and all that you need to do is telephone 0115 9155555 with a proposed route for the walk (nothing too exact is needed)!!!
I am sure that Catie is helping you wade through that side of things but I just wanted to butt in on a really good idea !! I wonder if I can get to Nottingham that weekend!?!

Thankyou to everyone who took part in the walk 4 Darfur it was a successful and moving event. Particularly the candel lit vigial at the end where Darfuri's in the Nottingham community got to remember those who they have lost. Hopefully it gave the Darfuri some hope that some people do care about what is happening in their country and as for the rest of us give us, motivation to do whatever we can to help the people in Darfur and the Darfuri's in our own community. It was also great to see the MP, John Heppell speak out about Darfur. Also thankyou to Catie at junction 49 and timebank, thankyou for supporting the event and making it possible. Hope to see you all again.
