What it's all about
The sky Lantern (Kong Ming Lantern) was originally invented in the Chinese 3 kingdoms era by the best left hand man of Liu Bei called "Kong Ming". In one of the battle against Chao Tsao, he was trapped in one of the city with all the communication been cut off by Chao Tsao army. He then invented the Sky Lantern to send the information off for reinforcements. The information was written on the Sky Lantern itself. Ultimately, the reinforcement arrived in time and defeats the Chao Tsao army and save the entire city. Since Kong Ming, Sky lantern has been a truly remarkable culture for the Chinese Community.
In the modern days, Sky Lantern have been used broadly in China as well as Thailand for celebrating occasions such as Weddings, Birthday Parties, Anniversaries and etc. In Taiwan, there is a Sky Lantern Festival that people celebrates annually; the highest record was 5600 lanterns were launch at the festival. You simply just couldn’t imagine how the atmosphere was if you weren’t there, it was such a phenomenal night.
The initial idea is to share this amazing culture with the community. Suppose most of the local community would be fairly interested in such a different and unique culture. Also, people write their wishes and problems which they would like to get rid of, onto the lantern and hope the lantern would make their wishes come true and take away all their problems. The idea was to launch at least of 100 lanterns at the event and we might invite the young people with learning problems and the people that suffer from cancers; hopefully this event could give them a sense of warmth, touching moments which could be a valuable memory for their entire life. Since this event would most possibly happens in the February 2008, which means we could collaborate Chinese New Year and Valentine Day. Apart from that, I also realise that NSCA will be having their Anniversary in February too, that means this event could link up the Chinese New year, the Valentine Day, and the Anniversary of the NSCA Group. Most importantly, I deeply believe that this event could be someone’s most valuable memories EVER(at least it does the job in the east).

This sounds like a brilliant idea - the picture looks amazing! It's a really brilliant way of linking our student community and a really exciting way of sharing different cultures.
Northumbria Students' Union is taking part in TimeBank's Juntion 49 project and offers funding to students who want to develop and lead their own volunteering projects. You can access up to £750 in funding from us, and any additional support or training that you might need.
I'll be in touch to arrange a meeting in which we can develop your project idea - work out which community groups you could work with and how you will involve volunteers in your project!
Best wishes
