What it's all about

I would like to set up a volunteering project that links Durham University volunteers with the Durham branch of Relate. Relate is an organisation that provides relationship counselling and support to couples, children and families in order that strong family units are at the heart of communities and society. Their manifesto states that 'strong communities are only built through the influence of healthy, resilient families'.

Building a volunteering relationship with Relate is one important way that members of the student community can work positively with people in the local community by helping Relate to provide support to them during relationship and family troubles.

At this stage, the project involves a small number of volunteers whose role is to assist in the administrative and clerical duties of the Durham branch of Relate. By taking on reception duties and providing support and assistance to full time staff, students can get involved in a meaningful way with the work that Relate does in helping family dynamics. Full training will be provided by Relate.

What's needed to make it a reality

In order to establish the project, a small fund will be required so that travel expenses can be provided to volunteers that have to travel to the project, to run extra training activities and to organise social events for participating volunteers.

  • Avatar Jo & Andy 09:53, 30 November 2007 It was lovely to meet you on Wednesday. I knew I recognised you from some where I guess it was Geography. Thanks for putting this up so quickly. Your proposal looks great. Please let me know how the project is going. If you do organise a day when all the volunteers meet at Relate please let me know and I will try come along so I can meet everyone in person. I think the volunteers will be really beneficial to the charity and look forward to watching this project develop. I finally have my junction 49 email address set up so you can either continue to use my personal email address to contact me or use my work on which is junction49.sca@durham.ac.uk
    Thanks

    How's your project developing?

As you are a student at Durham, one of 15 universities working in partnership with Junction49, your Volunteer Support Officer(VSO), Jo (who commented above!) can help you to help you access up to £750 of funding
