What it's all about

Inspiration came from current problems and past experiences with inner London social issues and the implications it has on the future prospects for young people.
‘Enfuse Youth’ aims to educate young people age group 14-16 and to create an economic opportunities by addressing employability, creating awareness about social issues , educating about financial literacy and providing a foundation for developing entrepreneurial capabilities among young people. We hope to generate enthusiasm and creativity through use of innovative teaching materials, e.g. on-line and board games; role models and films.
‘Enfuse Youth’ encourages self motivation, raises confidence, challenges anti-social and offending behaviour as well as ensuring young people have an opportunity to achieve their full potential.

According to NSPCC, a quarter of children bullied by their peers reported that they suffered long term harmful effect lasting into adulthood; in the first six months of this year (2007) London have seen 4 youths aged between 15 and 17 murdered as a result of being shot. Debt is increasingly recognised as a problem for young people. Personal finance is not covered in the national curriculum and many students do not understand the basic financial terminology. Therefore they struggle to stay away from debts after leaving the school. According to the prospectus, career’s services desk fifty four per cent of employers believe that it is harder to find an adequately skilled graduate than it was ten years ago. Nowadays there is a damaging disconnect between young people and organisations - a disconnect between the training of today and the workplaces of tomorrow. Today’s employers are looking for the following skills: problem-solving, team-working, creativity and innovation, ability to work under pressure, flexibility and multitasking, which is not covered by the national curriculum.
We have identified a niche market for a whole package programme, which will address all issues described above.
‘Enfuse Youth’ is a programme, which provides a solution to young people today. It will be delivered over six workshops covering social awareness, financial literacy, employability, entrepreneurship and networking capabilities. We will initially focus on the local secondary schools in Kingston and Twickenham areas and hoping to expand to primary schools and other boroughs of London. Through our programme young people we work with will be better equip with the basic financial management skills, will be able to meet demands of the today’s and future employers, will be aware of social issues in the society which may affect them as well as being open to the option of starting and running their own business.

We will create a 12 minutes video to showcase students’ success and address the social issues with input from government key figures, actors and young people themselves. It will raise awareness, question government policies and will show what is required to take local issues to the national level. ‘Enfuse Youth’ project will demonstrate an impact it made on a local community by showcasing success stories and a short film.
The 12 minutes film structure as follows:
- 2 minutes - issues in action by actors
- 3 minutes – information about Enfuse Youth
- 5 minutes – interviews with the key figures
- 2 minutes – questions and other issues raised by participant, volunteers and other members of public

This project will set a foundation for young people having a growing input into tackling social issues in the future.
Volunteers will act in the film and facilitate the sessions. They will interview key figures and will build mentoring relationships with people participants in the workshops. They will learn from the workshop as well as brining their own experience and views to share. Volunteers will gain inspiration and practical skills. They will have an opportunity to make a difference in their own communities. We plan to recruit 15 young volunteers to help us to undertake this project and influence the current situation in the society. At the same time we will create a network, connect young people with inflectional government figures to inspire and empower to be part of the bigger picture. We hope this project will demonstrate and will provide a foundation to solve the problematic issues in the local communities and will ensure the better future for young people and opportunity to be part of Youth Movement Network. We plan to evaluate the success of this project by carrying out the questionnaires in the beginning and in the end as well as filming the progress and interview participants and all other people involved.

What's needed to make it a reality

We will recruit 15 volunteers to support the project.
Being in the university environment will help us to cut equipment costs and will provide us with basic resources to make the film production happen. However, we still require financial support as follows:
- Marketing materials - £ 150.00
- Travel expenses - £ 150.00
- Teaching materials - £50.00
- Additional equipment - £100.00
- Emergency budget - £50.00
TOTAL: £500.00

We would appreciate any support and encouragement from key government figures or social entrepreneurs who may run similar programmes in different areas to make this happen.

Thank you very much for posting your idea and for coming in yesterday. I think your project idea sounds fantastic and will be great to expand the workshops you have already set up to include the short film. As you know because you are a student at Kingston University you can access up to £750 to turn idea into reality. I will be in touch again soon. Celina (VSO -Kingston)
  • Avatar zw!tch 11:25, 23 January 2008 Gosh this sounds like a really well thought out project, and once this first run has been a success you should definitely roll it out across other boroughs, and perhaps even nationally! I'd be really interested to hear about how this progresses - and please do post up your showcase videos
