What it's all about

Asked several friends to name Ten things they likes about thier body for a homework project. Many couldn't even manage 5, I then asked them to name 10 things they hated, some went passed ten. we then sat down and had a conversation about how we see ourselves and the problems with body image in the media. It made me realise that sub consciously we judge ourselves against a standard set by a Size 0 driven world. It has got to the point where girls who wear size 8, are asking if "they are too fat."

I would like to go into school and talk to young girls about how they see themselves, the part the media plays in it all and to help them understand that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. Most importantly i would like to help them realise that intelligence, kindness and a good personality matter a lot more than who's wearing what.

What's needed to make it a reality

I would like co-operation from a few schools,
volunteers who will run the program with me (males and females)

I would lke to make a self esteem kit. I understand the things that motivate me and make me feel confident but i would like to hear from other people so that we have a variety of things that would appeal to a majority of children.

I will need expert advice from someone who is used to working with children to train the volunteers in the right way approach such a sensitive subject and relate to the children.

  • Avatar Nadia Cole 12:28, 29 January 2008 Self esteem, self image and perceptions of ourselves and others affect young people in so many ways and having a chance to refelct on this with others can help us understand things better - but as you say it is a very sensitive subject. I'll be in touch with you by email and hopefully we can meet up to discuss your interesting idea in more detail.
