What it's all about
Last year UCL Islamic society held a big bake sale with all proceeds going to the Britsh heart Foundation. This was great success raising a huge amount of money for this cause. UCL Islamic society would like to hold a similar event in 2008, during Islamic Awareness week 2008, since the benefit of this type of activity is endless. As well as this the past success of this event portrays that the strategies and ideas behind the event are sound enough to ensure a good turnout, and success. In previous years this cake sale was held solely using donations from shops and individual donations which in itself raised a vast amount for the charity. With further funding this project could be expanded and held on a larger scale meaning that more money could potentially be raised (due to being able to procure more produce, as well as hold other charity based events such as hiring out activities i.e. bouncy castles/ games/ entertainment) all of which could be used to raise money. Thus the actual small event of the cake sale has the potential to become a large scale bazaar or fun-day where people could not only unwind, but also become more aware of issues concerning charities such as the British Heart Foundation, and donate towards it. If a larger scale project was also funded, then perhaps more than one charity could also be supported, giving people the chance to be better equipped in terms of knowledge about all these charities, as well as more likely to find a kindred cause that they might like to donate towards. All in all it's all for the sake of giving to places that are in dire need of funding be it scientific research or orphans around the world, so the benefit of any funding would be immeasurable.
What's needed to make it a reality
The main thing is some type of funding to carry out the planned activities. All past bake sales were based solely on donations, and although these were much appreciated to make this event bigger and more diverse (i.e. with other activities) takes some hard cash. This applies even more if we wanted to hire out equipment, and charge people to use it, for example bouncy castles, paintballing tournaments within the grounds, other types of games tournaments involving equipment etc. A fun day would thus need funding to make it feasible as an actual event rather than just an idea.
