What it's all about

We are a group of 5 Business Administration year 2 students. As part of our course, we must undertake an Action Project- a project that benefits the community.
We have to chosen to create an awareness campaign on healthy eating for students. We discussed the topic and realized that many students, before coming to university, did not cook much. Hence, once at university, the task of creating nutrionally balanced meals is actually a rather daunting task. Furthermore, student life is craving—we study hard and play hard. In between running for a lecture, a society meeting, and then getting ready for the night’s excursion, we often fail to surpass that ready meal, completely free of any fruit or vegetables. There simply is not time to create a healthy meal. Even more so, many students find the prospect of eating healthily unexciting. Therefore, our aim is to show students that eating healthily is easy to do both on a budget and on-the-go.

To create awareness we are hosting an event on campus. It will consist of a stand outside the library on campus, which is the main thoroughfare for students going to lectures. We will be:

• Handing out information leaflets that promote the values of healthy eating
• Handing out a healthy eating recipe book which we are going to create
• Giving out free food and drink samples provided by prospective sponsors and created by ourselves

What's needed to make it a reality

What we need from the University is funding to print our leaflets and healthy-eating recipe cards. For our stand to be noticed, we need the material we hand out to be exciting, eye-catching, and fun. Hence, we need funding to colour-print our flyers and recipe cards.

The recipe cards include varied recipes to suit all students. There are breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack recipes that are simple to produce. To make this recipe card as relevant and appealing to students as possible, we are including a lot of well-known recipes, such as fish and chips, but showing how easy it is to cook a lighter, healthier version of the loved meal.

For this recipe card to make an impact, we need it to be professionally printed as we want this booklet to be one that is kept by students and not simply discarded or dropped once they have visited our stand.

We also need funding to print posters and flyers. The posters are important so that we can properly advertise our event before the actual date. We want people to know about it beforehand; this should increase the impact we are able to have if we can create interest in the event.

We also need some funding for our stand. We really want to make it as colorful and bright as possible by adorning it with posters containing information on healthy eating. This will help us attract attention.

Apart from posters, flyers, and the cards, we would like some funding towards purchasing food supplies e.g. fruit, smoothies, and snacks. We believe it to be crucial to make samples of some of the easier recipes included on the recipe cards to show students that the meals really are delicious, healthy, and easy to make.

We also intend to have a quiz on healthy eating facts, at the stand, that students can partake in to win for example, a slab of healthy beetroot chocolate fudge cake (a recipe on one of the cards) or a banana.

Overall, we expect to need about £500. This should allow us to print as many recipe booklets as possible, ideally we would like to be able to print 500. This should also allow use to create posters and flyers to raise awareness of the event before it takes place. Finally, it will allow us to purchase all the samples necessary as we believe this is crucial in attracting people to the stand.
