What it's all about

In the short term we want to provide low cost (Or if at all possible FREE!) capoeira classes for children in the community. We ran childrens classes last year and they were a huge success but as is so common these days in these sorts of situations, even though out of their own good intentions for their own cause, room rent prices at the community centre went up and our Instructor started paying out of his own pocket. He insisted on keeping prices down but eventually they had to come to a close.

In the long term there is a dream to find a place to rent or eventually buy that will be provided as a community centre/gym that will be open to people of all ages to come and go as they please with a full timetable of capoeira classes and associated Afro Brazilian activities (Music, African and Afro-Brazilian dance, History, Philosophy, debate ...anything people want!).

In an area renowned for it's culture, too large a proportion of LOCAL kids don't receive ENOUGH opportunity to explore these character building experiences.

We have a million ideas for adults alone but feel that what we provide is at least somewhat accessible to adults. It's the local kids that need somewhere to go and something stimulating to do....something easily accessible that they will WANT to come to each week....something that is THEIRS....

Capoeira, with it's roots reaching back to slavery in Brazil, teaches dance, music (Song and traditional instruments), Afro Brazilian culture, martial arts, rhythm, balance, flexibility, strength, self confidence, self expression and discipline. Above all our group's philosophy is that we are all equal and should all be free....

'Para Não Ser Cativo De Ninguém'
To be nobody's captive!

Our group, like capoeira has many strings to it's bow.... full of qualified teachers, nursery nurses, IT experts, builders, singers, dancers, actors etc etc etc we stand eagerly ready....

What's needed to make it a reality

For the short term we need a cheap space to provide kids classes and if at all possible support or funding so that we can provide these classes as cheap as possible or FREE while also being able to get the idea out there with promotion!

In the long term.....support and guidance in setting this sort of thing up, a space, funding...anything that will help us closer to our idea being reality.

Sounds like you have a real passion for this! Sport England have a list of possible funders, there might be one for you! http://www.sportengland.org/

Check out these postings on meet up too - there are a few people wanting to get involved in capoeira in Bath! http://capoeira.meetup.com/cities/gb/bath/

Because you are a student at Bath Uni you can access up to £750 to turn your idea into a reality. Bath Uni is one of 15 Universities who are taking part in the scheme where you can access funding, training and support from your Junction49 staff member (Sabrina) to help you get your project up and running.
