What it's all about
In the first 2 weeks of June, 12 students from UCL will be attending two primary schools in Camden that back onto each other. Although these schools share grounds, one is protestant and one catholic and so the children rarely integrate.
In the 2 weeks that we are attending we will providing 2 hours of teaching and games in the following areas:
Fencing, Cricket, Dance, Tennis, Rounders, First Aid, Sex education and Martial arts.
At the end of the two weeks the children will receive an official certificate from a recognised First aid service (already organised) and a separate certificate from the VSU for their participation as well as t-shirts. The final day will be a fun-day with mini-games, food and drink and an opportunity for the children to have one last go at every activity.
The inspiration for this project came from the fact that when I grew up I never really had many after-school activities to choose from and as I have grown up I have become more and more health conscious and increasingly concerned about the sedentary and antisocial lifestyles of the youth and so hope to promote not only healthy living but also positive social interaction and these two schools - underprivileged and segregated merely due to slight differences in religious practice - proved the ideal candidates for the objectives of this project..
