What it's all about

We would like to hold an arts and crafts day for children from the local community with the aim of raising awareness about fair trade, organic and recycled clothing.
Children would be split into 4 groups, each partaking in a hand-on activity to produce a garment or accessory using fairtrade, organic and recycled materials. The four groups would be:
W - wrap yourself: showing kids how they can design their own items. Each child would produce a bag made
from organic cotton.
E - environment: learning about organic cotton, what it is and where it comes from.
A - awareness: learning what fair trade means. Children will each produce a new fair trade logo and print
them on a fair trade t-shirt
R - recycle: children will have the opportunity to rejuvenate an old piece of clothing by cutting, sewing
and embellishing it.

This will culminate in a fashion show with the children modeling along side models from the UCL fashion society who will be helping all day.

What's needed to make it a reality

I have a school that is interested so before recruiting the volunteers, I first need to get all I need is the material!! I need to source organic cotton and fair-trade t-shirts as well as purchasing fabric pens, ribbons, bead, etc.

  • Avatar Nadia Cole 10:02, 18 March 2008 This is an exciting and worthwhile project that will raise awareness about fair trade, organic and recycled clothing but will do so in a way that will capture the imagination of the children involved and be lots of fun. You have already got well under way in establishing links with the school and costing the resources needed and we'll continue to meet up to turn your idea into reality!
