What it's all about

Inspired by the suggestion from the NSCA to help in a project put to them from the North and South Jesmond Ward Co-ordinator, Clean the Dene. A litter pick around an area of Jesmond Dene, Newcastle to improve the Denes environment . But feeling that the opportunity of litter picking alone although may be beneficial to the environment and building social skills it may alone may fail to attract many volunteers and fewer again new volunteers. An idea to increase initial appeal was to turn the litter pick into a more pleasant and sociable event and encourage more people to join in by add the prospect of including a picnic within the main event, litter pick. This will hopefully make the litter pick event more sociable, remember able and enjoyable. This may lead to a sense of pride within the surrounding environment, building team work and social skills, and create a positive attitudes to both littering and the Dene itself. Although this is a one off project it will hopefully raise awareness of another new project "Adopt a River" and hopefully give a good kick start to that project.

What's needed to make it a reality

The Neighbourhood Services are providing litter pickers, bags and gloves and for the project we have advised every one to bring there own packed lunch for event.

I like your idea to make the litter pick more sociable...food always brings people together!

Since you're at Northumbria Uni and it's one of the unis Junction49's working with in partnership you can apply for up to £750 funding to run your project. Contact your volunteer support officer (Samantha) to apply for funding, training and support. She'll be in touch with you soon to discuss your idea further!

  • Avatar grangey 14:47, 06 April 2008 thanks.

Sorry to say the idea wasn't a roaring success as only 3 students participated in the end, posiably due to timing as most student have re-turned home for easter or at work. Also due to the weather we called off early at 12 so didn't really get an opportunity to eat for lunch. Thanks for the sugestion of funding but I don't think we really need any now. Although I do think the litter pick went well, there was certainly a lot of waste in the back of the van when it left, and the Dene looked a little cleaner.
