What it's all about

People with different ethnic background comes together to produce a fair. The fair would be separated into different rooms and these rooms would be designed to represent each country; every time some one walks into a different room they would feel as if they are in another country. These room would contain speciality foods from that country, games, items for sale and also information on the current country and its history. I feel that in orer for the public to go and see every room, there should be a map and every time they visit a room they would get a stamp on the card. If they have all of the stamps then they can place it into a box which then means that they are entered for a prize draw. Towards the end of the fair, there would be a small fashion show in which local schools and centers created and the prize would be announced.

What's needed to make it a reality

In order to get started, I would need to ask for space; either a hall or open area. Go and ask people from different backgrounds if they are interested (ask when the local group is having meeting) and also ask schools if they would be interested. The cost of this project is also an issue as the groups would need ingredients, fabric, and other materials.

    Welcome to Junction49!

Community and cultural awareness are issues that are becoming more and more important to people...and the more events to tackle this the better I reckon!

Community centres usually have space to offer for local events so you shouldn't have too much problem finding one - for example, I see you're in south east london so how about Woolwich Common Community Centre
    16 Leslie Smith Square, SE18 4DW
    Tel: 020 8855 2437

You might have trouble finding somewhere with lots of different rooms but somewhere where you can have lots of stalls for different groups would work just as well...

Do you have a list of countries/cultures you'd ideally like to be represented at your event?

As for funding check out the Awards for Bridging Cultures. Junction49 is also offering the chance to win some funding - check out the criteria here and add anything you think is relevent here as a comment!

If there's anything else we can help with just ask - Junction49 is here to help you turn your idea into reality...

    Cheers,

    Zoƫ

My father was involved in a Cultural Awarness Fair that his office ran - they had one main room where they set out an auditorium and then had the people from the various cultures perform on the stage in front; each culture took it in turns to share something about their culture, they were allowed to portray it in any way they wanted to, for example, a woman from Ghana held a scalf tying competition where she demonstrated the traditional technique and then got members of the audience to attempt the technique themselves.
On the side was a buffet table with food from all the different cultures placed on the same table with information about each item.
The way in which it was presented meant that everyone took part in each others cultures together and thus it braught everyone together much more closely i feel than if everyone was seperated by their own stall or room.
just an idea to aid your plans though, make use of it as you will :-D
    good luck, FrankMG
  • Avatar Victoria Elliott 17:23, 15 September 2008 I went to Cardiff University who put on 'Global Village' based on a really similar concept. All of the stalls were in one room but there was a fashion show, dancing and theatre showcased from all over the world. Have to say one of the best bits was the food...local restaurants came along with menu samples and there was lots to try!

Perhaps instead of different rooms, try grouping the stands together by continent? This may make the event more manageable and also would create a great atmosphere as different countries host their stands next to each other.

Try contacting local community groups to attract the diversity that you want. Think it's a great idea to try to involve schools as would be an interesting way to learn about different cultures outside of the classroom

Maybe you could charge an entrance fee as that would then cover some of your costs. You may find that some of the people you would like to attend already have their own materials and equipment for stands.
  • Avatar Shanice 14:49, 23 November 2008 I love your idea and me being a girl of ethnicity supports you 100%. I'm not in uni and have no skills other than two hands & commitment so if that is of any use to you i would be happy to help. Two things i can do for you though is as soon as you have dates etc. i will inform all of my friends aroun london to come to the event, i'm sure they will be happy to make your idea a success. I can also use my knowledge of designing and making clothes to add some ethnic decor; it's just a thought. remember i am 100% happy to help. (by the way if you don't hear from me in the week from 8th December to the 15th December it will be because i have my exams). I'll be looking forward to hearing about your campaign more.
