What it's all about
The Centre project, situated in the heart of Leicester, provides a welcoming space to the homeless, unemployed, vulnerably and recently re-housed, asylum seekers, refugees and those with special needs. The project aims to be an environment in which its clients can “meet other people, break isolation, get practical support and learn new skills.” This goal is pursued through a variety of activities and services, including art and craft sessions, cookery lessons, counselling, a drop-in canteen, games (pool, table tennis, table football) and day trips. On top of this, clients are able to enlist the help of volunteers on a number of issues, such as corresponding with the local authority or having a problem referred to a third party agency. The Centre receives on average 160 visits per week.
The drop-in sessions start with a nutritious ‘home cooked’ meal after which users are encouraged to take part in some activity during the session. Most of our service users relax, rediscover self-esteem, enlarge their interests, learn new skills such as photography, art and craft, ESOL, IT, music and become more able to take charge of their lives, including finding part-time work. Some have formed mutually supportive friendships, which extend outside Centre hours.
