What it's all about
Callon Kids’ Community Club (CKCC), based on the Callon Estate in Preston has over 130 members, and is an outstanding example of how offering varied sporting and community activities to young people can vastly improve a community and help reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.
The aim of the CKCC is to actively divert children away from crime by promoting and offering varied leisure, sporting and community activities to children who live on and around the Callon estate. The Kids Club also promotes social inclusion, aspiration and healthy lifestyle for all the children and volunteers associated to the club.
The CKCC has had a great impact on reducing neighbour nuisance, crime, anti social behaviour, and racial tension within the Fishwick ward of Preston. This is partly due to the success of delivering leisure, sporting and community projects in partnership with many local agencies and businesses such as the Groundwork Lancashire West & Wigan Wild Life Trust, Police, Fire Service, Contour Homes, Preston City Council Sports Development, Schools, etc. Statistics provided by Lancashire Police have confirmed that crimes such as vandalism, arson, vehicle crime and burglary have fallen dramatically since 2001 and as such, the Callon estate is now categorized as a low priority policing area.
The CKCC provides the children of Callon access to an extensive range of activities. During the last 12 months, a weekly timetable of activities had been offered to children of all age groups. The activities include Fishing club, Golfing club, football-training sessions three nights per week, football-training girls only every Saturday, swimming, Rock Climbing, squash, and badminton every Thursday night, we have a mini multi-sports section that teaches touch-rugby, basketball, netball, and cricket. As a community club, we do not just offer sporting activities we provide children with the opportunity to develop and promote the area they live in by improving certain building, wastelands, and grot-spots.
Without support from key partners, such as Preston City Council, Groundwork, Contour Homes, Football Foundation and the University of Central Lancashire, CKCC would not be able sustain all the positive work that has been achieved on the Callon estate
The idea for this project will be to create a quarterly newsletter, produced by CKCC members and volunteers, highlighting the activities that have been going on within the Kids Club and the wider Callon Community.
The newsletter will have quite a large circulation of up to 500 copies, to be readily available in the Club and/or delivered to the local community.
To prepare for the production of this newsletter volunteers will contribute to 10 one hour long sessions. They will also do this again after the first publication, if it is successful.
The main aims of this project will be to:
- Build awareness of the Kids’ Club through the newsletter articles, and to highlight positive outcomes of the activities & community projects being developed.
- Encourage as many of the young people who are interesting in developing a newsletter.
- Develop the young people’s key skills associated with the creation of a newsletter, i.e. computer skills, literacy, photography and communication.
What's needed to make it a reality
Materials, such as paper and ink cartridges will also be required.
Callon Kids Community Club currently has access to 4 computers, so investment in this area won’t be needed. All materials for the newsletter will be used in the production of the newsletter and subsequent newsletters thereafter.
Comments
Perhaps you could draft a budget of what you would need to produce the newsletter and how you think it would improve the community it serves.
You could get some of the young people who have been involved in the activities to write their stories as an inspiration for others. As you have computer access then this could be another activity co-ordinated for young people to be pro-active and maybe find some budding journalists!
Would really like to hear how you get on with this!
