What it's all about

Imagine the scene. . . You’re a first year student learning to party during your first year at uni. Do you think you know what to do if one of your new friends from halls has an epileptic fit, gets alcohol poisoning or has a severe allergic reaction? Most first year students in these situations would not know what to do and may even end up making things worse.

I would like to get posters printed and mounted in a prominent position in each halls flat outlining what to do in the most common emergency situations. These could be designed by arts students at the university or purchased from an outside company.

Ideally I would like to get these made before freshers week so the posters will be in halls of residence from day 1, but if we can even get them in halfway through this semester then students will still be prepared for the rest of the year.

What's needed to make it a reality

I would need to know what are the most common accidents or emergency situations students would have to deal with.
Advice from a reputable source on how to deal with these situations e.g. British Red Cross.
Artist to design the posters.
Money to print the posters.

Sounds like you’ve really thought about this idea! I agree that first aid advice is lacking at Universities and halls of residence are an ideal place to target your information at as people who have just met will not know each other’s medical ailments.

Has Middlesex Uni got a Health Clinic…I’m sure they might be able to help you out with common injuries and good practice first aid. For example what to do if someone drinks too much, recognising signs of drink spiking, allergies, burns and meningitis.

Ask around friends and housemates for any experiences they’ve had as I’m sure these must be common amongst students.

Would be great if you could update us on how this goes as it could be an example for others.

    Victoria
