What it's all about

I would like to ask pple here concerned with animal rights involving youtube videos to contact Rob at PETA.org.uk or by phone. He has passed on my list of videos found on youtube depicting cruelty to animals, to PETA.usa who will contact Youtube. He advised its no good tackling the abusers themselves as its what they want.

saintviolette has asked for help on this idea - Find out how you can help

What's needed to make it a reality

If you see these videos, on youtube send the title of it to PETA.org.uk, and the manager will pass the information to PETA.usa, and from there they contact youtube as an ongoing battle. The hope is to get Youtube to ban these abusers from online community and can even make arrests. So if you see dodgy cruel treatment of animals send it to PETA.org.

  • Avatar Vikki Elliott 11:16, 22 September 2008 I agree that it is shocking that videos you have flagged are not being treated seriously.

I have been having a look at the terms of use for content posted on youtube http://uk.youtube.com/t/community_guidelines and animal abuse is one of the listed behaviours which will not be accepted.

You need to publicise the fact that this content is on the site for people to be aware and flag such videos. Many people who would be disgusted at animal abuse videos would not know they exist as they would never search for them.

Maybe you could organise a written petition to send to the company at their headquarters:
    YouTube, LLC
    901 Cherry Ave.
    San Bruno, CA 94066
    USA
(Their phone and fax numbers are also listed under ‘contact us’ tabs on the site.)

At the top of the petition write a brief paragraph about the issue you are complaining about and compile a list of names, addresses/emails of respondents’ who support the campaign.

Are you at college or university or a member of a community group? If so use this platform for canvassing supporters! You could also try adding actions to this idea to get other Junction49ers to sign your petition and maybe even use them to gather signatures as well?

Please let us know how you get on, what other help you need and any further ideas you have to stop the animal abuse videos.

  • Avatar Martin Crosby 14:59, 22 September 2008 This is a really good idea and it seems shocking that YouTube aren't taking simple precautions to stop publicising this kind of abuse.

It would have to be something you'd think long and hard about, but with campaignssuch as this one it can be useful to get your local councillor or Member of Parliament on board. They usually have contacts/access to local media that make it much easier to raise awareness and a letter of complaint or a petition is much more likely to be responded to, especially from a huge company like YouTube, when someone 'important' heads them up or writes an introduction. That said, there are some disadvantages to doing this.

I've had some experience working with local politicians on projects, so get in touch if you would like any advice.

  • Avatar Vikki Elliott 11:19, 23 September 2008 I see you have now added some actions to your idea which is great as other Junction49 members can see these and take up the tasks. This should encourage more people to flag the videos as it is very simple for them to do when already sat in front of the computer.

Your idea is really powerful as for example I was not aware of videos like this existing and I care about animal rights. I think the main emphasis at the moment needs to be on awareness…if people do not really use YouTube or know of content such as this existing then they will not be motivated to campaign for change. This is where Junction49 can really help as we have given you a platform to get your idea and views heard. We already have over 1000 members and the website is growing by the day so you are reaching out to a massive audience!

To engage other people in more active campaigning, you could draft a petition and then offer to send it to other Junction49 members who have expressed an interest in helping by taking up your actions.

You can also create an online petition http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/ to add a bit of political weight to your campaign.

Have you taken a look at the idea ‘Campaign against Trophy Hunting’ (http://www.junction49.co.uk/idea/1585/campaign_against_trophy_hunting/)? Perhaps you can draw some further inspiration for awareness raising from the efforts of this Junction49 member? For example animal rights organisations may have some suggestions for you.

Please get in touch if there is anything else we can help you with.
