What it's all about
This BRAND NEW scheme aims to help improve the quality of life of elderly people, particularly those with dementia, living in local residential homes. Often these residents sit for long periods of inactivity which has been proven as non-conducive to any condition they may have, let alone their self-esteem.
We aim to run exciting activity sessions which harbour the potential of the lovely and talented students at UCL, whilst also offering the residents a longer-term befriender volunteer to help them engage and participate in sessions.

What's needed to make it a reality
Kathy's Club seeks:
-UCL student volunteers who are interested in befriending schemes/ working with the elderly
-UCL clubs and society members who would like to apply their skills in the wider community, which would greatly enrich the activities sessions we hope to run

As you are a student at UCL you can access up to £750 to turn your idea into a reality. UCL is one of 12 Universities who are taking part in the scheme where you can access funding, training and support from your Volunteer Support Officer (Nadia) to help you get your project up and running. I see you're already started working on this with Nadia, which is great.
You'll have to let us know how it goes and you can use the diary tab to record your progress, and share your experiences with other Junction49er's. Report Abuse
I hope the setting up of this project is going well. I just thought I would let you know, about some similar projects which are running. In Derby, Davinia is setting up a project working in a residential home teaching the elderly how to make handmade cards.
Marketa, in Kingston is also setting up a project providing a whole range of craft activities to the elderly. I've provided the links incase you want to check out their ideas and even get in touch with them, if you want to share advice, ideas etc...

I was advised to contact you because we are both doing similiar projects. I had my first session on Monday, decorating glass candle holders with the elderly. It was fun, although now I realize I chose too complicated project - some of the ladies were not able to hold the paintbrush etc.
In the next session I plan to do silk painting, which is much easier, so I hope all the ladies will enjoy it.
What are you up to?

I've hear your project has been a great success and your last session is tomorrow. Good Luck for the last one, i hope it goes well. I'm sure the care home have appreciated all you have done, so a big congratulations. If you want to do a diary post once you've finished to let everyone know how the project went, I'm sure everyone will be really interested to read about it.
