What it's all about

This is an event to help local, young musicians to get recognised in the community and to also show people that they can enjoy themselves without alcohol. It would further be to help raise funds for my local arts group, ALIVE, who provide arts opportunities for the community. Young musicians or groups could perform anything from ceilidh music to rock music in front of an audience. My inspiration is from my local arts group who are permanently trying to promote local, young talent but unfortunately lack the funds to do it. They are putting on "Seussical the Musical" next year which requires a lot of funding. The alcohol free side comes from seeing the state that some housemates get themselves into after drinking too much and how much fun I see people having with no alcohol. I am hoping for bands connected to "Live 'N' Up" to play. www.myspace.com/livenuptour or bands connected to The Gig, www.gigstogoto.co.uk

What's needed to make it a reality

I don't know where to start in order for this to become a reality.

This sounds like a really great idea and a good way to remind people that you don't need alcohol to be able to have fun. I think this is an event which could be really successful As you are a student at Bath University you can access up to £750 to help turn this idea into reality.

Perhaps the first thing you could start to think about, is where you would like this event to be held? Could you book a venue within your university or perhaps a hall in the local community, even maybe where your local arts group is based? Do you already have some bands who might be interested in getting involved in this event? Once you've got a venue and a date, you can then look into ways of advertising the event, perhaps through student media at the university, flyers, or even your local newspaper.

Let us know what you think and if you need any help or advice.

Great idea and good to see you back in Somerset, if briefly! I've contacted the 'Under age bands' group I told you about, I imagine they'll be delighted to have the opportunity of a good venue and audience which this idea and funding will provide. At the same time they'll be raising funds for the local performing arts group that many of them are involved in as well. And the students get a mid week 'night out' ! Brilliant! Isn't that what they call a Win/Win situation! I'll let you know when I've got feedback and you may get a posting from Dave/Luke (band organisers) too.
  • Avatar Gemma Down 12:39, 22 October 2008 I have been thinking about the alcohol side of this, and think that maybe if it is in the middle of the week, ie a tues or thursday, then people would be less inclined to drink anyway, but that if there is a total ban on alcohol, it may discourage people from attending.
  • Avatar Sarah Corrigan 17:26, 22 October 2008 Hi Gemma,

Perhaps you do not have to promote it as being a non-alcohol band dance and promote it as a fundraiser for your local arts group. Once people are there, if there is no alcohol it is not as if they attended thinking that there would be alcohol and will have a good night all the same. What do you think?

  • Avatar Gemma Down 20:03, 22 October 2008 That is a good idea! A win/win situation! I have spoken to someone at my uni regarding venues and have some ideas for them, and have also got some bands who I can ask to play. Regarding dates, if it was midweek, there is not much on so would be a good time, and if it was done during school half term, then younger band members would be able to play without worrying about getting to school the next day. I am just waiting to hear back about whether it is ok for under 16 people to play at the venue I have in mind, but hopefully this should be ok. I was just wondering what I need to do regarding the funding. Do I need to contact anyone in particular?
  • Avatar Sarah Corrigan 10:30, 23 October 2008 Sounds like you've made a good start with your idea Gemma and have really thought it through. Regarding funding, because you're a student at Bath, you can access up to £750 to help turn your idea into reality. Bath has just recruited a Volunteer Support Officer for Junction49 called Scarlett, but she doesn't start until 4th November. Your VSO can help you access all the training, support and funding you need.

You can also check out the Bath University page here:
    http://www.junction49.co.uk/university/56/university_of_bath/

Perhaps, you could contact her at the beginning of November to arrange a meeting to discuss your idea and funding. In the meantime though, if you need any help and advice then just post a comment or you can contact the helpdesk, we are always happy to help. If you already have an idea of what funding you might need, you can record it in the funding section of your idea. I will let you know once Scarlett has started and will also tell her about your idea so that she can get in contact with you.

  • Avatar Gemma Down 23:27, 03 November 2008 I have hit a snag with this. The place that would be ideal to host this ie most people would go to, will only allow bands aged 16+ and won't restrict the bar to only serve soft drinks. I don't know whether to book this venue or risk a different one, which may mean less people attend and also having to provide own equpiment, staging and a bar. The young people front is not too much of an issue as the bands will be 16+ anyway.
  • Avatar Sarah Corrigan 10:43, 04 November 2008 Hi Gemma,

Where is the venue you've found is it based within the university? If not, you could see if your union has anywhere which they would be happy to use, maybe if there is a big enough cafe area which you might be able to use for the night. Or maybe, you could look into hiring a community hall or a space at a secondary school where some of the bands might go to school and then you could just provide your own refreshments area?
Scarlett, your Junction49 Volunteer Support Officer at Bath has just started today, so will email her telling her to get in contact with you, so she can support you in setting the event up and get you access to funding. Let me know how the venue hunt goes!!
