What it's all about
What we want to achieve is to develop a place where children can feel safe, address problems and develop themselves.
Our project has been adapted as the needs of the youth club have changed. They are in dire need of a new music room. They are open 6 days a week and bands are practicing in them all the time. Bands which are going to headline this year’s Hub festival in Liverpool and also bands that headline the Zanzibar events setup as a dry night (alcohol free night) to encourage children off the streets and into something productive, music. Also just to give them new experiences in this free night.
The youth club we are restoring is Marybone Youth Centre which works on events like the Zanzibar dry night and others. By resorting there music room this can help to the bands development which can be life changing, having the necessary equipment for a band to succeed.
What we are looking to acquire for the youth club is vital musical equipment and general building materials to restore the room. Building materials consist of lighting, lots and lots of paint and a large piece of plaster board for a large hole. For this we have a volunteer who is going to fix the wall and we also have a qualified electrician who is going to carry out the work required. We need an electrician as the ceiling is quite high and due to new health and safety regulations they will need to get an electrician out every time a light bulb dies as unqualified people cannot change a light bulb past a certain height, crazy I know. So with the help of our electrician we can install wall lights which would be much easier to change and people within the youth club would then not need to waste time and money to get them changed.
By doing this we hope to keep the children attending the youth club and we would be elated if more children were to attend. We will address every point raised for the youth club.
What's needed to make it a reality
Due to revised project plans and great discounts we have negotiated the price with suppliers of our equipment needs to £351 and with this money we can do the work required. Our application has just gone into Junction 49 and hopefully we will get the money we require to make this an excellent project.

Thanks for posting your idea. As you're a student at LJMU, you can access up to £750 to turn your idea into a reality. LJMU is one of 12 Universities who are taking part in the scheme where you can access funding, training and support from your Volunteer Support Officer (Lucy) who should be in contact with you soon to help you get your project up and running. You can take a look at the university page here:

Last year, students from UWE (Bristol) took part in a similar project redecorating a community centre, so it might be worth checking out their idea here; http://www.junction49.co.uk/idea/1376/redecorating_southmead_community_centre/ You could get in contact with the students to find out what they did and to see whether they've got any advice to help you get your project off the ground.
Let us know what they say and if you need anymore help. Good luck with the 'Changing Rooms' style transformation :-)

Sarah mentioned that you were looking to get your project off the ground. Just thought to share our experience on the Southmead project in Bristol. We had about 20 student volunteers from UWE repaint the main hall and dining area of the community centre in a day.
Numbers: Getting the word out early and providing enough information about the project helps ensure there are enough volunteers to get the job done on time. (Could consider getting the local community involved?)
Paint: If there's a fair bit of repainting to be done then its worth investing in some good sturdy rollers and brushes. Water-based paint makes it easy to clean up spills and equipment.
Your project's a really good idea that would benefit the children in the local community, hope it gets the funding to start it off soon. All the best!

There's this website I've been told about, which would be great for you to use to get the paint for your project. http://www.communityrepaint.org.uk/What_is_Comm.php Community RePaint is a company which redistributes unwanted reusable paint while helping out the community at the same time. If you go to the website you can find your local Community RePaint project. You can get the paint for a small donation, so it's much cheaper than buying it in the shops.
Let us know how the development of the project is going.

I am on the Junction 49 team and love this idea! This type of project would be great to photograph - in true makeover style - before and after! Could you send me some more details about when you're doing it, how many people are involved and I also wondered if you could you let me know what motivated you to choose to do this project? Did you always want a youth club when you were younger or are you involved with young people through uni? Also, are you from Liverpool?
I might want to come up and check it out the day. Could you contact me either on this site or on my email: kwilson@timebank.org.uk
Thanks!
Kate

Any news on how you're getting on with this project? I'm still really keen to photograph it and don't want to miss the before shots so the more warning you could give me to prepare to come up to Liverpool the better!
Thanks,
