What it's all about

DramaJam is an independent dramatic arts outreach programme fostering confidence in order to give young people a platform to better their communities.
We provide Youth Theatre workshops for schools and youth groups for 13-18 year olds run by other, more experienced young people aged 18-30yrs. The workshops are highly versitile catering based on a prior assesment of the needs of the schools, partcipants and the community. Previously, we have run workshops focusing on 'breaking down' Shakespeare to the influence of the daily news. We are also working on a mentorship scheme.

Our Mission Statement:
- To provide free and fun dramatic workshops that will enable young people
- To foster an environemnt of mutal respect; enhancing interpersonal skills
-To strengthen ties and empower local communties

Annabel Sowemimo has asked for help on this idea - Find out how you can help

What's needed to make it a reality

Since, Dramajam was established a few years ago it has come a long way but we believe that the time is right for the organisation to expand. We have decided to restrict our volunteers to those that have some dramatic experience (unless you wish to assist with project planning etc).
Currentely, we are on the look out from as many experienced dramatists as possible as well as directors, writers & technicians. E-mail annabel@dramajam.co.uk
We are always on the hunt for young people that are need of our services whther this be a school, youth group or an individual. E-mail annabel@dramajam.co.uk

  • Avatar Sarah 18:09, 28 October 2008 J49 Team Hi Annabel,

Thanks for posting your idea, it sounds fantastic. Gemma last year, ran a similar project at Kingston, you can check it out through the link below. It might be worth getting in contact to find out if she can offer you any words of advice.

    http://www.junction49.co.uk/idea/1223/anti-bullying_drama_workshop/

Things to think about before setting up the project could be contacting drama students or a theatre group at your university who might be interested in volunteering on this project. They might also have an idea of where you could run the project. You could also get in contact with local schools to see if you could recruit pupils from there or even if they would host the workshop. It's also worth finding out space is available within your university, as they might have rooms or somewhere with a stage ideal for holding your workshop, which you may be able to get for free. I hope that is of some help to you.

It's great to see that you're already in contact with Nadia. She can help you access up to £750 in funds, as well as support and training throughout the development of your project. UCL is one of 12 universities taking part in this scheme.

  • Avatar Sinéad Lemonade 15:26, 28 January 2009 Are you stilling working on this idea?

I would be happy to help. I've been involved in amateur drama (mostly as a teenager) and also have experience leading youth groups and performing arts projects with young people.

I'm not working at the moment and I'd be more than happy to help out assisting with the planning of the sessions, the behind the scenes stuff and possibly some facilitation of workshops (although I have no official training- besides an A level in Drama & Theatre studies- which was quite theory based). I'm friends with a couple of professional actors (who may like to lend a hand- one is trying to set up his own community theatre project) so get in touch if you still need help or need help in the future.

  • Avatar Sarah 14:19, 26 October 2011 J49 Team Hi Annabel,

I found reading your updated idea really fascinating. It's so good to hear how this idea has grown and is still going strong. The concept sounds brilliant.

In terms of funding I can definitely think of places you could apply to for funding. Here are some links below:

    Awards For All http://www.awardsforall.org.uk/england/whatwefund.html
    - You can apply for funding of between £300 and £10,000 for your project, although when applying you might want to use this money for work you're doing in a different area as they won't fund existing activity if that makes sense.

    - O2 Think Big http://www.o2thinkbig.co.uk/
Awards of £300 for your project, given in stages, for projects to improve the community. This is open to 13-25 year olds. You get £300 when you first apply and then after that bit of funding is completed you can be invited to apply for a further £2500.

    - Live UnLtd http://www.liveunltd.com/
Live UnLtd will give up to £5,000 of funding and all the support needed to turn a great idea into a reality. Open to 11-21 yr olds. (you could always get a younger volunteer to apply for this if you're not within the age range)

    IdeasTap http://www.ideastap.com/
I would strongly recommend registering with this site as you'll get weekly emails letting you know about the different opportunities and funding streams available. They have different funds or 'briefs' (as they called them) every month so worth checking to see if you're eligible. They have links with the National Youth Theatre and other organisations as it's all about creative ideas with a focus on the performing arts world. They may be worth getting in contact with about your idea if possible, as they have some links.

In terms of organisations, there is one I can think of that you could get in contact with called Pan-Arts based in Camden: http://www.pan-arts.net/pages/get_involved.html We've met with them in the past and they do some great work with young people and this could be just up their street.

I hope that helps initially to get started with looking for funding etc... If you need any help with applications or want us to have look over them before you send them off, feel free to send them through to us.

Also, just to let you know I've tweeted about the meeting at the end of November and the call for young people to join, and have already had a few people retweeting already. Fingers crossed you'll have lots of new volunteers getting involved.

Let me know how we can help further.

  • Avatar Annabel Sowemimo 09:02, 04 November 2011 Yes, I've joined the site and updated my profile but have not applied for the grants yet. I awaiting to finalise my project timeline with my group so, that we can put foward a good application. I joined and then put DramaJam as my user name.
Any advice of what parts of the project to emphasise would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Annabel

  • Avatar Sarah 17:21, 04 November 2011 J49 Team Hi Annabel,

Sounds like everything is going really well and finalising the timeline before you move forward with an application is definitely a good move and the best way to go.

Good to hear you've signed up for Ideas Tap too. I think for their application as it's up to £1000 decide what part of the project you want to get the money for and focus on that e.g. if it's to go towards covering the cost of putting on a performance you could give a bit of background information on the project and then talk about what impact you would hope the performance to create.

When you come to writing the application if you want us to have a look over it do just send it our way.

  • Avatar Sarah 15:01, 22 November 2011 J49 Team Hi Annabel,

Just going through your application now and will send back over to you this afternoon.

In the meantime just wanted to let you know about something which you could apply for for your project:

You could get £20,000 for your project and all you need to do is post it on this website - www.thestake.co.uk and get people to vote for the idea. The 20 ideas with the most votes or stakes will be shortlisted and then 6 will be given funding and support from some top mentors. If you go for it, let us know and we'll help promote it via Twitter and Facebook.

The other thing I would you might be interested in is getting an Arts Award for either you or your volunteers. I think it's an accreditation/qualification provided by the Arts Council. You can find out more about it here: http://www.artsaward.org.uk/site/?id=64

  • Avatar Annabel Sowemimo 11:26, 23 November 2011 Thank you, for your reply and the Arts Award looks promising. It would really enhance our project if we could allow extra qualifications to be gained whilst taking part. Hopefully, we will be able to gain funding to attend teh courses. I have contacted them.
I am actually meeting with a women from Barclay's today so, I may try and gain some advise on the best means of approaching this stake award.
I'll keep you updated with my funding applications. Many Thanks, Annabel

Just wanted to check in to see how everything is going with DramaJam and if you've been successful with anymore funding applications?

Have you attended your O2 training day for your project yet?

    Hope it's all going well.

  • Avatar Annabel Sowemimo 03:08, 11 March 2012 Hello Sarah, I'm sorry its taken me a while to get back to you. We are only due to have fourth workshop next week. We are running 8 at a school in Wood Green. I was under the impression that you did the 02 training day after you finished the project? To be honest, it was not explained to me how the 02 scheme actually works. I have not applied for any more grants as the applications are quite long winded and I have not had the time. Are there any others that have cropped up since I last spoke to you? Thanks

  • Avatar Sarah 12:19, 12 March 2012 J49 Team Hi Annabel,

Ah ok, I thought you had to go on O2 training before you got the funding but if you've got it already then that's great. That's what I understand from previous people who have been funded by them, but they may since changed it. I think once you finish the first bit of it, you have to write a report or maybe you have a phonecall with them and then you might get invited to 'Think Bigger' where you can apply for a further £2500.

It sounds like everything is going really well with DramaJam at the moment. That' fair enough if you haven't been able to anymore funding. There might be a new fund opening up soon, but I'll let you know about that once I hear more.

Just thought I'd check in to see how things are with DramaJam? If you have any photos or updates you can add it would be great to see how the workshops are going.

I also wanted to let you know about some new funding that has become available from vInspired Cashpoint. You can apply for up to £500, but it would have to be for a new element of the project whatever that may be. Here's the link. http://vinspired.com/vcashpoint/opportunities/10066-vinspired-cashpoint/activities/157789-funding-for-your-project

Hope everything is well with you.
