What was your project about?
Well my project was about getting students to come along, socialise, interact and play sports with one another. I felt that there were people out there who weren't able to socialise properly in environments such as pubs, nightclubs and other clubs, this is because they might've felt out of place, low in confidence as well as being the only person who doesn't drink alcohol. I also felt that these people might be looked down upon for not attending such gatherings. I also felt that misconceptions about one another, be it race, religion or various other reasons stopped people of different backgrounds and personalities from integrating with one another. By having my Indoor Sports and Social session, I felt I was able to deal with the problem. I seen students interacting and socialising with one another in a relaxed environment and in our Sports sessions we were able to get students to play sports such as working out and kickboxing as well as Badminton and Basketball. Students who attended loved the sessions and those who didn't certainly missed out. Our project also promoted healthy eating and exercise.
How do you think it made a difference to the community or wider world?
I felt it made a big difference to our university and community because students in the social session were able to interact and socialise with another in a relaxed and fun environment. They even got to eat healthy food, including non-alcoholic drinks. Students from different backgrounds got the chance to get to know one another. In the sports sessions, students also got the chance to workout, do kickboxing and play sports which they weren't confident of playing. All the sessions were free and students who attended certainly gained a lot, such as enjoying themselves in a environment where they felt relaxed and comfortable, getting to know one another as well learning the importance of healthy eating and living a healthy lifestyle, for example, doing regular exercise. They also found out that they should always give a shot at everything, even if they might not first feel confident about doing it.
What did you get out of/like about volunteering on this project?
I got a lot out of volunteering on this project, I feel by running this project, it helped me to improve my leadership, personal, social, comunication and time management skills. I was very pleased to see my idea become a reality. There were a lot of things I liked about volunteering on this project such as planning and deciding what we were going to do in our sessions. In our social session, I certainly enjoyed playing on the Nintendo Wii, eating healthy food and drinks as well as chatting with a lot of students. In the two sports sessions I enjoyed working out, kickboxing, playing with balls, playing Basketball and Badminton. We enjoyed playing with one another and learning how to work as a team. What pleased me most was when two students came to play Badminton, they seemed certain in not playing Basketball but we managed to persuade them to play. Much to their suprise, they very much enjoyed playing Basketball. I certainly enjoyed playing a big part in making our Indoor Sports and Social session project a great success.
