What it's all about

My project idea is to link up local schools/colleges with schools in South Africa. I think a first step could be through a pen pal scheme whereby students in the UK could write to students in SA and vice versa. During my gap year I visited a few townships and schools within them, I feel these communities would benefit more from such a link than more developed ones. By writing to the students of these schools I believe it will give the Uk students a great opportunity to learn more about other cultures, help develop an awareness of Social Issues and appreciate differences and challenges that others face. For the South African students it will provide an exciting opportunity, will enable them to learn about other cultures and help with their english. I chose this idea of a pen pal scheme because receiving a letter from someone shows that they have taken the time and care to write it, something now more rare; lost in the wake of technology. Also by establishing this connection we could identify issues that the schools could help with for example books for their libraries etc then possibly in the future schools could organise exchanges programmes. I think this would be an invaluable opportunity for students in both countries that would nurture confidence, cultural awareness and a desire to help others. Once set up, I would like to visit with the first letters from uk students and if needed read them to the students abroad, helping them to write back and providing them with pen pal packs that they can keep (including paper, pens, potage etc) I think by doing this and by taking photos it will make it more personal/real for the uk students and help secure the projects future.

What's needed to make it a reality

This idea is still in the early stages so I need help finding out info such as how best to pitch this to schools, how to select an age group based on language skills and how best to make this sustainable once setup. Also if anyone knows/has connections with other schools in Africa that would benefit from and be interested in this?

Thanks for posting up your idea. My primary school is linked with a school in Africa and the students get a lot out of it. If you're looking for new fundraising ideas, Junction49 can help you develop something which you could run at the university so that you're not targeting the same people. If you create links with local schools, the pupils could help you to fundraise too by doing cake sales or non-uniform days. I have a friend who is currently doing a year abroad in Ghana as part of VSO (Voluntary Services Overseas) and she works with groups of young people so could always be an alternative link for you in another part of Africa.

Junction49 is where young people can develop their own ideas for positive change in the community and students who wish to develop a voluntary project to benefit the community can access up to £750 to turn your idea into a reality. Bath is one of 12 Universities who are taking part in the scheme where students can access funding, training and support from your Volunteer Support Officer (Scarlett) to help you get your project up and running. Helen will also be able to let you know if you're eligible to receive funding. Check out:

Thanks for coming to see me. I hope you get on okay with contacting schools. Have you had a look at other's ideas to see if there are any school linked ideas you could get advice from? Maybe about how to approach schools etc...

    See you soon

    How are you getting on?
There is a list of contacts for local schools on the local council website, this could be a gooc place to start your enquiries. There is a choice of primary, secondary etc, did you have a particular age group in mind? http://www.bathnes.gov.uk/BathNES/educationandlearning/Schoolsandcolleges/schoolcontactdetails/
I'm sure you'd have no problem making the idea appeal to schools, as it relates to English language skills, geography, history, global citizenship, and the idea of using good old snail mail has a certain charm in these days of email and instant communication.
It'd be great to suggest activities which go alongside to spread the idea out over the school year so that it doesn't fizzle out after the first few letters. Every time we started something exciting like this when I was at school, it seemed to get forgotten by the teachers within a few weeks, and I found that quite disappointing.
Oooh it's very exciting, if you're having any problems, do give me a shout, and I'll see how I can help, whether it's working out materials needed or how to best approach schools etc.

Best of luck with exams, see you soon
