What it's all about
Designing and distributing an easy to use cook book that helps people learn the basic skills needed in the kitchen to create healthy, interesting and cheap meals.
My aim is to give people a tool kit for cooking, a basic understanding of which foods go together, what herbs and spices to use and enabling them to create their own food to the best of their ability without the need for a recipe book. I have already designed and created a large number of recipes that meet these targets, they are easy to use and tasty and I am in the process of creating a 'how to' guide to act as an introduction.
This would be aimed at students and young people. I have found other student cookbooks on the market to be patronising and sometimes not very appetising.

Great work, really enjoyed meeting you today and I think things are already going fantastically. It's great that you've already got uni involvement and I think this project can make a big difference to both the university and local community. Hope things go well Monday and look forward to budgeting with you on Tuesday!

Thanks for submitting your idea. This sounds great.
I know what you mean about some cook books aimed at young people and students being a bit patronising. I think a cook book for young people, written by young people is the ideal solution.
Have you heard of student cooking tv? They're all about getting healthy recipes out to students - http://www.studentcooking.tv/. They have some quite funny, if not a bit ridiculous videos to watch too.
There are also some ideas on Junction49 already which are similar to yours
http://www.junction49.co.uk/idea/1396/healthy_eating_for_students_on_a_budget_and_on_the_go_/.
Maybe you could message them and see if they have any advice to give.
As you're aware, because you're a student at Kingston University, you have access to a Junction49 staff member on campus. Martin will help you to plan and deliver your project.
Good Luck and let us know how you get on!

I really like this idea. I was never a beans-on-toast-student and agree that a lot of cookbooks that aim to keep the budget down also are low on inspiration!
Perhaps you could arrange for your fellow students to submit a recipe? You could do this through your Junction49 page...I'll happily start you off if you want! Report Abuse
I know Ella mentioned it to you before, but II just stumbled across the Bath idea for student healthy eating and they had some great ideas for recipe cards which could be handed out in the from of flyers (a bit like the recipe cards you can pick up in supermarkets)

Also, I have just discovered this website http://www.thestudentkitchen.com/ which has receipes from the very simple to the more complex. Report Abuse
Thought you could take a look at Not Beans Again - a website which creates a recipe from what you have left in your cupboard - http://www.notbeansagain.com/. I thought you could perhaps think about some typical store cupboard ingredients to get recipe inspiration! Report Abuse
I thought that having some recipe cards in the goodie bag we give out would be a nice idea. What do you think? Timing is a bit of an issue for me. We are looking to get into schools with the complete project right after Easter. Of course, we could work out something that works for both of us. The recipes would promote your cookbook and would be of your design. If it sounds like something you'd be interest in then please get in touch and we'll have a chat!
