What it's all about

The 'finding your feet' fashion show aims to be a youth-led project. Essentially we want to raise money for the Diana Award so that they can implement some of the wonderful projects they have available with effectiveness.

We want to include as many different communities from in and around London and we aim to do this by working closely with as many universities as possible to bridge the divide between them and discover new talent within the fashion industry. The opening fashion show aims to showcase some of the up and coming as well as established designer in the United Kingdom.

Hopefully by using creative and innovative fashion designers we will be able to involve the youth of our communities so that they will be helping with the planning and delivery of volunteer opportunities. This will help us raise awareness for young people from diverse groups and disadvantaged communities. Eventually we will be able to set up a number of smaller fashion shows in separate areas so that volunteers will have further opportunities to progress with experience in project management.

What's needed to make it a reality

Contacts with other universities in the London area. Ideas of possible venues which are not exclusive to the student body and are elite enough for our VIP clients from the Diana Award. Something acessible so as close to central as possible. Something that accomodates 200+. Preferbly unique setting but not really necessary and most importantly omething reasonably priced. We would really like it to take place in a period Church if possible. Something like LSO St. Lukes (",) which would be amazing but on our budget impossible.

Also contributions from individuals as well as coporate bodies to support the show.

It was great to meet you yesterday at the training session. It sounds like you have lots of great ideas and really know what it is that you want to achieve. So anything that we can do to help you out, just let us know :-)

I said I'd provide you with some links to other Junction49ers ideas on the site who have done similar ideas. Here they are below. You can click on them, take a look and if you want to find out more you can comment on their idea and they might be able to offer you a bit of support and advice.

    http://www.junction49.co.uk/idea/1810/fusion_fashion_show/

I tweeted on Twitter to see if anyone knew of any good venues in London you could use for it, so will let you know if I hear anything back. I'll also mention it to the London universities we work with.

Don't forget, you can access up to £300 from Junction49 up until the end of July 2009 to help you turn this idea into reality, but if you want to hold it after then we can help you apply and find the necessary funding from another source, so just let us know :-)

I love the action planning table you sent through. You can start adding these here to your idea page if you like, by clicking on the 'Add an action' button. Other Junction49ers can then grab an action if they want to volunteer and help you out!

Good Luck and look forward to hearing from you soon :-)

    P.S. Loving the photo :-)

  • Avatar Sarah 14:15, 11 June 2009 J49 Staff Hi Jane,

I've had a response already about potential venues:

There's RichMix, which is quite a cool place:
    www.richmix.org.uk/

The Albany in Deptford was also suggested. I've never been, but apparently it's quite cool and not too expensive:
    http://www.thealbany.org.uk/

There's also Amnesty International's Human Rights Centre, which is really cheap and they have different rooms you could use:
    http://www.amnesty.org.uk/content.asp?CategoryID=10185

The Bloomsbury bowling lanes are really cool too and you could always see if you can haggle down the price.

I hope that helps a bit.

  • Avatar Jane Larbi 18:54, 11 June 2009 Wow, I've just been looking through all the responses thanks for taking the time out today to do all of that research. Richmix is really cool but too far in one direction. The Albany was my favourite but again is in South London. I think we are looking for something closer to West London but not soo close it's ridiculously expensive. The amnesty place is cool as well, but I think we are looking to accomodate around 250 people. so the more space the better. Bloomsbury bowling lanes are super cool! But I don't we will fit 200 in it without it being so expensive. The St Alban's halls are good as well, but again too small. I think we will definately keep tabs of the one in Deptford though if we can't find another one, the trek hopefully will be worth it. Report Abuse
  • Avatar Jane Larbi 19:16, 11 June 2009 Maybe more direction would have been helpful in the first place. Something acessible so as close to central as possible. Something that accomodates 200+. Preferbly unique setting but not really necessary. Something reasonably priced. We would really like it to take place in a period Church if possible. Something like LSO St. Lukes (",) which would be amazing but on our budget impossible. Thanks for all your help again. I'll get on some research as well and putting up the actions. Report Abuse
  • Avatar Jane Larbi 19:25, 11 June 2009 Also is it possible to apply for the Junction 49 funding to reduce the price of the venue hire? That would be a start. Report Abuse
  • Avatar rsolomon 16:50, 12 June 2009 Hi Jane,

It was so nice to meet you all at the session on Wednesday - I loved all the great project ideas, including your fab fashion show, which sounds like so much fun and would make a real difference (just what we like to see here at Junction49 HQ!)

Thanks for adding all the actions. We're really looking forward to seeing your project develop.

With regards to using the funds to cover some of the costs of the venue, yes, you can do that; once you've found a place you want to go with and have established the cost, let us know and we'll email you the form and agreement for the Junction49 On The Ground funding.

Speaking of venues, have a look a this guide (some of the places mentioned are quite central): http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/590A3398-0B70-410D-B92A-C1216CF209AD/0/LambethVenueGuide.pdf

    Hope this helps!

    Have a great weekend :)

P.S. Your cert's on the way in the post!

To answer your question, yes, it's definitely alright for you to find other organisations to support your project with sponsorships and such like; in fact, we encourage it as we're happy to see you get all the backing and support you can to make your project a success!

    Cheers :)

  • Avatar Sarah 15:01, 23 June 2009 J49 Staff Hi Jane,

How are things going? Just thought I would let you know of a potential funding opportunity you could apply to - it doesn't say anything about not funding fundraisers, so you could be in with a chance, the only thing is that the deadline is next week; 30th June. You can apply for between £500 and £5000 for your idea.

    http://www.ideastap.com/Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fDefault.aspx

If you decide to apply and want some help filling out the form, just let me know or give me a call and I will more than happy to help :-)

Just read your message, that's fantastic! Sounds like things are going along really well. Of course I'll put a call out to all the London Universities we work with and see if they know any students who want to get involved. This is all very exciting.

Don't forget you can use the diaries tab at the top your page to update everyone on what has been happening and what continues to happen as you set up this fantastic event.

Let me know if you need help with the funding form.

Did you manage to get your funding form in on time? Good Luck!

How is it going getting other universities on board? Have you approached Chelsea or the London School of Fashion. I was just talking to someone from our Communications department who said that the London School of Fashion are always interested in getting involved in charity events etc... so it might be worth approaching them.

All sounding really great so far.

  • Avatar Sarah 11:15, 20 July 2009 J49 Staff Hi Jane,

How's the planning going? I just thought of another fund you might be interested in... www.bigchallenge.org.uk. The closing date is 28th September so you've got a while, but the fund supports projects which are all about bringing unity to the community, so yours could be the perfect idea, although again I'm not sure if they would be able to fund fundraising events, but definitely worth looking into.

  • Avatar Sarah 17:18, 21 July 2009 J49 Staff O brilliant, do you have quite a few on board then? I have contacted all of them, but none have got back to me. I think it's because all of the students have gone home now, but will put a reminder out again in September if you like. All the Fresher's might be keen to get involved. I have a friend too who I think might be interested. Report Abuse
  • Avatar Jane Larbi 17:34, 21 July 2009 Yep, the designers keep flooding in. • Avatar sara macleod 00:00, 06 August 2009 If you are looking for technical, production or someone to design a poster or flyer etc you should put an ad on the arts council England mailing list. It's free to post and goes to loads of ppl. There's also an Arts Events list that is also free to post on and could be good for advertising.
