What it's all about
Our aim this summer is to mentor two young girls called Coretta (16yrs) and Kareen (15yrs). We've already had parental consent over this period, 17th-21st August. The reason for this is because based on personal experiences there hasn't been a youth organisation aimed at young girls, run by young girls.
The Big Sista Project will run on Monday to Friday 9am-6pm. This is so that the sisters can spend a full day together, learning from one another and being a role model in all situations of that day.
The Big Sista Project will go to a lot of outdoor events because of summer such as Hyde Park for picnics and outdoor learning events, Natural History Museum, Zoo and roller discos.
By pairing the little sister with the Big sister they can learn from one another. This summer is our first trial so there will be a lot of note taking on the pros and cons of the situations that arise. We also intend for the Big Sista Project to own its own youth clubs across the U.K. when it expands so observation is key.
• The Big Sista Project will teach all the girls about themselves.
• Raise positive role models within the community
• Visit youth clubs/universities for talks about womanly issues and also for volunteering guidance.
• Provide info packs for youth events and job applications
• All sisters enter a sisterhood and will comply to monthly meal meet ups.
• Getting involved in the community (painting, cleaning, helping the community)

It was great to meet you on Saturday at 2morro (www.2morro.org) I hope you had a good day and enjoyed all the sessions.
It sounds like you have a very exciting summer planned with this project and hopefully if it's a success you can begin to think about how you can make it even bigger and better and get more mentors involved. Seeing as you're looking to set this up as a proper project it might be good to start off by getting a CRB check done (Criminal records check). This is something that everyone needs to have done to be able to work with children and would be good practice for you especially as you want to eventually expand.
I said I would give you some links to other similar projects on Junction49 which you might be interested in and you can find out more by just commenting on their idea:

In terms of funding, here are a few which you might be interested in applying to:
• O2 It’s your Community http://www.itsyourcommunity.co.uk/Default.aspx
Awards of up to £1,000 are available to local groups and individuals for anything that can be shown to benefit your community.
• Vcashpoint http://www.vinspired.com/opportunities/vcashpoint/
Young people between 16-25 years old can apply for up to £2500 to set up a project which will make a difference in their communities.
• YouthBank http://www.youthbank.org.uk/
Only provide to local young people. If you go to the website and find out whether there is a YouthBank near you, you can then get in contact to find out about how you can apply for a grant.
If you do want to apply for funding but need some help and advice with applications, just let me know and I'll be more than happy to help. We can also check over any applications before you send them in to make sure you haven't missed anything. It's also worth phoning up the funder beforehand to check whether your project is eligible and they might be able to give you some advice at the same time about what they are looking for in the projects they fund.
Just let us know how we can help and Good Luck.
Remember as you won the pitch at the Junction49 Project Surgery at 2morro, where those who attended and discussed their idea with our panel of experts were in with a chance of winning £200, you can use this money towards your project before the end of September, so just let us know.
Hope to hear from you soon,
Sarah

I have just read about your idea for you project and I would be really interested in helping out. I am available to help at the end of July and for the first 3 weeks of August if that is any good? I would be happy to send you more details about myself etc and see if I would be suitable to help with your project.
I am new to this site so haven't quite worked out the logistics and what I am supposed to do to express an interest in a project. But hopefully this is right!
I look forward to hearing from you,

How are things going? Have you started mentoring yet?
I thought you might be interested in this idea someone recently added to Junction49, they're doing something similar so might be able to share thoughts and ideas.
