What it's all about

I would like to raise awarness of the signs that some one may be thinking of suicide. You see when I tried to take my own life I showed signs that I was going to do it but everyone thought I was joking. I want to be able to go into schools, offices, parent groups ect just to tell people the signs and to take them for real and what to do next. If I could save just one life I think it will be worth it.

Fiona Rose Mills has asked for help on this idea - Find out how you can help

What's needed to make it a reality

I think I need expert opinion to be able to tell people what to do next and I do not think people will take me serously.

  • Avatar Sarah 13:02, 20 April 2011 J49 Team Hello Fiona,

I'm Sarah from the Junction49 Helpdesk here to support you in turning your idea into reality.

I think this idea is a very brave one, particularly when coming from a very personal point of view, but a project with a very important topic to address. Suicide and suicidal feelings is still a very taboo topic in today's society with people tending to turn a blind eye rather than facing the facts, but hopefully your project will go towards addressing this issue.

It sounds like you're worried about people not taking you seriously. I've looked in to see what sort of thing the Samaritans currently do and they have a couple of different programmes where they go into schools and the workplace etc... They have volunteers who go into schools to deliver talks. It may be worth getting in contact to see if they have any advice they could offer you, or perhaps if on the first instance you could accompany them to one of their talks to see exactly what it is they do.

I've copied a few links here from their website which you may find useful:
    http://www.samaritans.org/your_emotional_health/working_with_students.aspx
    http://www.samaritans.org/your_emotional_health/about_suicide/helping_others_at_risk.aspx
    http://www.samaritans.org/your_emotional_health/other_sources_of_help.aspx

What is really important for you and the other people involved in this project is that you seek support if you need to and make sure that the people you speak to are aware of support services out there that they can speak to if need be. Laura-Liz, a fellow Junction49er, has left this really useful comment on someone else's idea but I think it's a great piece of advice: http://www.junction49.co.uk/idea/2620/smiles_after_tears/

I hope that helps initially to get you started, let me know what I can do to help.

    Best of luck,

    Sarah

I think this subject is a very delicate one and you are very brave for wanting to raise awareness of something like this. Because you have experienced this subject first hand, and it's something your compassionate about I have every faith in you that this project will be a success.

I wish you all the luck in the world with this.

  • Avatar Tani 20:10, 26 April 2011 This sounds awesome. I have an idea, I don't know if it would help but maybe we could make merchandise e.g stuff like shirts or pencil cases with 'Life's Worth Living' printed on them. Hope this helps.
    God bless

  • Avatar Mayoola 15:04, 27 April 2011 Hi Fiona,

My name is Margareet and i work at the Junction49 help desk. Is great to see how fast your idea has taken off and im sure the support for your vision is bound to keep rolling in. Tani's idea about creating merchandise with a ''life's worth living'' logo is a good way to raise awareness and funds towards the project and if you do consider this you can always use the action feature on your Junction49 profile to help get things started.

I look forward to hearing about the amazing things to come

  • Avatar Mayoola 16:16, 27 April 2011 Hi Fiona,

Its Margareet here from the Junction49 Helpdesk. Just a quick message to see if you are interested in partaking in a little mini interview for May’s signpost. Every month we like to highlight one or two ideas for the signpost and we’d really love to do a piece on ‘Life’s worth Living’. It’s such a fantastic and inspiring idea and I’m sure all the other 49er’s would love to hear more! This month’s concept is centred around ‘getting to know you’ , giving you the opportunity to tell other Junction49ers about yourself and your idea while raising awareness of your plight. The mini interview will be a mix of fun and informative questions and should last no longer than 50 minutes. We can either do it over the phone or by email, depending on which is more convenient for you? We don’t currently have a contact number for yourself so if you are interested in taking part please send in your telephone number and your availability. The interview would need to be scheduled before the signpost is due out in May.

    Thanks.
    Margareet

I really admire you for trying to tackle a subject as delicate as suicide especially as you have experienced it first hand. I truly believe you can do this!! I suffer with depression and don't know about anyone else but over the years I have found it more helpful and worthwhile to speak about it to people who know how your feeling and who have been through it themselves rather than the specsilists.
Love, wishes and luck on this project,
    Chloe xx

  • Avatar Mayoola 15:16, 01 June 2011 Hi Fiona,

The Guardian newspaper has announced Young people are to carry Olympic torch...
Young people and anyone who tries to spur on others to do better will make up the bulk of the runners in the Olympic Torch Relay, London 2012 has announced.

It wants half of the 8,000 torch relay runners to be people aged between 12 and 24 and the rest to include people with a story of achievement or contribution to the local community.
Junction49 would like to nominate you, so if you think you’d be interested in getting involved just let us know.

I’m Jyoti from the Junction49 helpdesk. It seems we haven’t heard from you in a while so was wondering how things were going. From what I can see, your idea caught much attention the moment you posted it, which is great. Hope this has continued.

Either drop us a diary entry or simply a comment. It would be lovely to hear from you.
