What it's all about

Throughout my life I have had a lot of experience with mental illness albeit myself or family members. When I as younger and in CAMHS, the child and adolescent mental health services my parents struggled and had very little support so I would like to create a support site parents/carers of children/young people with a mental illness.

Natalie Wilson has asked for help on this idea - Find out how you can help

What's needed to make it a reality

I am unsure about how to get the site known about once finished

  • Avatar Mayoola 14:30, 09 May 2011 Hi Natalie,

Welcome to Junction49. I am Margareet from the Junction49 Helpdesk, here to support you in turning your idea into reality.

Shoulder to lean on is a profoundly moving concept. Having an effective support network in place to help careers and others affected by mental health issues is so important. I know this all to well, as someone very close to me was recently sectioned under the mental health act and often that much needed support is not easy to come by.

It’s very commendable that you can use your own experiences as a tool to help others and make a difference. I find its these personal experiences of going through something and coming out stronger that have the greatest impact of all.

You mentioned creating a support site which is great. Would this be predominantly online or will you be incorporating other means of support, such as counseling, face to face sessions, support groups etc. Secondly who will be delivering the support, will it be yourself or will you be working with other mental health professionals, careers? These are just some of the things you may want to clarify to give you a better picture of what you will need and how best you can deliver the service.

Creating the website for your support group? Many Junction49ers have successfully used http://www.wix.com/ why not give it a go! This may help with networking and getting potential people to help out with your idea.

Having a rough idea of what’s already out there in your area and what you can incorporate or learn from always helps so here is a list of some resources!

I found a post onJunction49 forum post that may be of interest http://www.junction49.co.uk/forum/comments.php?DiscussionID=165&page=1#Item_1

There are some junction49ers who have similar ideas to yours. Amy created an idea called SMILE (Student Mental Illness Helpline) and Emotion- Ally by Laura Liz. You may find them useful and if you wanted advice or support I’m sure the other 49ers would love to be of assistance, so feel free to contact them. The links are:

In addition, we advise, it may help to have support systems in place for yourself as well as those using the service. Child line (0800 1111) give support to Under 18’s and Samaritans (www.samaritans.org) support those above 18. That additional support in helping you deliver your idea can make the world of difference.

Martys fantastic suggestion about designing some flyers and posters to hand out at your local CHAMS will, alongside your website, help raise awareness. Why not add an action telling other 49ers what they can do to help your idea and im sure you will have a few more helpers on board in no time.

If you need any funding for your project, towards website design, space hire, leaflets, etc, just say the word and I will send you the info.

I hope you find the information useful :D Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. This idea is going to go far and I look forward to hearing your progress
