What it's all about
The project aim is to create an African recipe booklet for young people with meals that are quick and easy to make and most importantly healthy.
We are hoping to work with at least five BME young people who will go around the community and interview African elders or any other community members that have special healthy African recipes that they might want to share with the younger generation. These will then be tried out but local young people and rated against whatever it is that the group decides. Once we have a few recipes gathered these will be printed into booklets and will be distributed to youth centres, schools, health surgeries etc.
We want this project to create new opportunities for young people and we want them to be recognised for their hard work.
What's needed to make it a reality
I have started doing an application for unding to Awards for All but now finding it difficult to finish it.
To make this a reality we need to secure funding and then look for young volunteers, preferably those that are NEETS as it would open up opportunities for them and give them something to do.
Also need encouragement from other young people that have been able to successfully get funding as I am feeling a bit wary now with what`s been going on in the voluntary sector.
If it`s not too much to ask for would also need help to launch our organisation!! But that can come after we have completed a few projects for the young people.
Available actions
- Core Volunteers aged between 16-25 needed! 5 more people needed (of 5)
- TGAY -Afro-Recipes for young people
- African Recipe Samplers needed!

Welcome to Junction49. I'm Sarah from the Junction49 Helpdesk here to support you in turning your idea into reality.
This is a fantastic idea with so many great themes all woven in - you've got the intergenerational aspect, the cultural aspect and the healthy living aspect too. Gathering recipes together to create a booklet is a great idea and you could also use this is a way to generate income for your group. It may be that you hand it out to free to schools etc..., but to those who can afford it you ask for a donation which will then go back into supporting your group.
You mention that you are applying for the Awards for All fund. If you want us to take a look at your application then by all means please send it across to us and we would be happy to talk a look. The email to send it to is help@junction49.co.uk. Is this to fund 'Go-Ahead Youth' generally?
You might be interested in checking out this idea from a couple of years ago called Carla's Cookbook: http://www.junction49.co.uk/idea/2026/carla_s_cookbook/ Her cookbook didn't cost much to publish so you might be able to apply for a small grant to cover the costs for this particular project and then the Awards for All money can go to the general pot of funds for your group. There are a couple of places that you could apply to for funding for this idea:
• O2 Think Big http://www.o2thinkbig.co.uk/
Awards of up to £2500 for your project, given in stages, for projects to improve the community. This is open to 13-25 year olds.
• Live UnLtd http://www.liveunltd.com/
Live UnLtd will give up to £2,000 of funding and all the support needed to turn a great idea into a reality. Open to 11-21 yr olds.
If you're thinking you need to fundraise generally to cover the costs, then you can apply to the funds above too to cover the cost of putting on the fundraiser which means all the money you raise will go directly to your group. You may need to check though whether they will support this activity for community groups and not just charities.
I hope that helps a bit to get you started.
Send across your funding application and generally if you have any questions for support/advice just let me know :-)

Welcome to Junction49. My name is Margareet and i work alongside Sarah on the Junction49 helpdesk. I see Sarah has given you some really useful tools to look into and i couldn’t help but comment being of African descent myself and a lover of food :) A celebration of heritage, healthiness and an opportunity to recognise the work of young people sounds like a great idea and also rather tasty :)
As always feel free to get in touch if you need any help

I`m glad you like my idea, I have finally sent off a funding form and will be hearing back from them in a month or so. Wish me luck.
Actually there is something you could help me with, but it`s to do with adminstration on the site, l think I typed my email address incorrectly, l was just wondering why I wasn`t getting any alerts. I have tried to change it but I am not sure if this has been corrected now.
Any idea how I can check?
So where in Africa are you from? I am from Zimbabwe.
Hope you are ok.

Thanks for your suggestion, unfortunately have already sent the application form so can`t change it now. But maybe in future we can look at having variety rather than focusing on one particular type of food.... if project is successful maybe we will develop it further by introducing in more foods.
Thanks and can you have a look at another project that I am doing please ...and feel free to give more suggestions, Thanks x

I applied to Awards for All for the recipe idea and for the event I aplied to O2 Think Big.
Have received funding for the event which will happen on Monday the 15th of August.
Still waiting to hear from Awards for All but will know probably before the end of August.
And maybe when the grant is awarded you could help us with some Nigerian recipes, pepe soup/fried plantain/jelof rice yum yum...Young people would enjoy that :D
Thanks

Now you have mentioned it,I think it would be so much better....
This idea has been put on hold. We were told to reapply after making a few changes.
We have now decided to apply to a different funder and the application process if opening on the 10th of Oct.
So watch this space!! O! Report Abuse
Sorry to hear you didn't get the Awards for All but good that they've given some feedback as to how to make changes. Which is the new funder you're applying to? If you need any help with the application just give us a shout :-)

Glad you found my suggestion useful :-) That’s a shame about awards for all, but never mind. There are plenty more opportunities to secure funding and I am sure such a brilliant idea will definitely come to be. As Sarah mentioned if you need any help, feel free to ask.

I'm Ada a new Junction49 helpdesker,
just had a look at your project and diary, what a great idea you have here.
There are very few African recipe booklets out there aimed at getting young people to cook traditional food.
Love It!!
Let us know how it has been going.

We finally have funding for this project!! Woop!
Project to start in March .... go to diary entry for more! :) :) Report Abuse
Was lovely to meet you too and definitely made my day, I was very excited and particularly to hear that you'd managed to get funding for the project. Love your note at the end and it is so true! You've just got to keep on trying because you never know what is going to happen and what funding will appear.
It sounds like you've got a big task ahead of you, but I have no doubt that you will pull it off :-) Nerves are natural and can also be really good as it's what makes it's exciting and will keep you going throughout the project :-)
Look forward to hearing more once you're up and going!
GOOD LUCK!

Finally got confirmation that we are good to go. Sent all the info they asked for last week and got an email from them this week saying everything was ok and they were happy we had met their grant conditions.
I`m just thinking how busy l am going to be. The Team v project, the event and this as well. A lot on my plate! But I`ll do it am sure :) hopefully.
Been trying to contact schools to get involved with this project, still waiting to hear back from them. Hopefully by the end of the week. Think it would be so much easier to get recipe samplers from schools and we could possibly use their kitchens as well.
Again will keep you updated :) Report Abuse
I hope you get some luck with the schools, they can be a bit tricky to get hold of. Depending who you've contacted already, you could look to see if they have someone in charge of extra-curricular learning who may be able to promote it for you. They usually have a particular title, but I can't for the life of me remember it.
