What it's all about

I am in the process of setting up a film production company as a young enterprise. The film company is focused on helping young women from diverse backgrounds find work in the film industry. So we expect to offer an AQA -Creative and Media Diploma and training as well as shorter workshops. The aim is to get training programmes set up for 6 month periods and that after completing the 6 months with us we can employ the participant for a further 6 months, so that they can work on our creative projects with us. It is in it's very early stages, we hope to find funding to get ourselves started. Alternatively we need other organisations to offer us the use of their film equipment and an office in which to train people in and to produce work as well as find volunteers, after that hopefully we can find our own equipment and our own office space. Here is a description of the company:

Black Mountain Films is a socially conscious film production company that aims to give young women from disenfranchised backgrounds the confidence and skills to work in the industry. Blackmountain is a new young enterprise established by a young woman- Siobhan Schwartzberg and her female colleague Rachael Davies, both themselves from disenfranchised backgrounds, Wales and East London respectively. They produce work that is creatively exciting and of a high quality and want the same for their participants. They believe the film industry is closed off for most young women and especially those from more diverse backgrounds, they want that to change. They want to make young women, the movie stars of the future. Could you be that star?

Siobhan Schwartzberg has asked for help on this idea - Find out how you can help

What's needed to make it a reality

Volunteers!! A Training space, an office space we can use to expand the business (though this is not as necessary) and production equipment such as Cameras and Tripods.

    Welcome to Junction49. I'm Margareet from the Junction49 Helpdesk, here to support you in turning your idea into reality.

    It’s great to finally see your idea up on the site. As a young woman from a diverse background I find the concept of Black Mountain Film amazing :) The fact that you’re also offering an AQA is a great benefit for those that wish to get involved.

    As for volunteers, I see you have already added an action to your idea page which is great. I’m sure other Junction49ers would love to get involved so I will add it to our forum page too. We can also help you tweet about it, just say the word. You can also request for volunteers through Facebook, and even set up a page on the site asking for people to get involved in your project.

    Sending out emails to those in your contact list and asking them to pass on the message may also be of help, word of mouth is often the greatest form of advertisement.

    For your venue needs you may find http://www.somewhereto.com of use. They work in partnership with Channel4 and help young people find free venue space to do the things they love.

    As for Production equipment you can apply for funding to cover costs.
    I have a friend who was part of the British film institute (BFI) for young people and they would always meet up in the BFI IMAX cinema to use the venue and rehearse scenes for their films. The BFI currently has funding that may be suitable for your project. Its called ‘first light young film fund and gives grants of up to £30,000 for creative filmmaking projects working with 5-19 year olds. I am not sure if this means you have to be working with this age bracket or be in it. To find out more check out http://www.bfi.org.uk/education/teaching/firstlight.html. Even if you’re not eligible they may be able to tell you of other resources they have available to you, just visit there contact us section.

    Other funding resources that you might also wish to apply for include;

    O2 Think Big http://www.o2thinkbig.co.uk/
    Awards of £300 for your project, given in stages, for projects to improve the community. This is open to 13-25 year olds.

    Ideas Tap which fund creative projects. They call their funds, 'briefs', and you can check them out here: http://www.ideastap.com/opportunities/briefs#Open-Briefs
