What it's all about
The idea was to hold this event during Black History Month but our funding took a while t come through so we have now decided to push it to beginning December, just before Xmas.
We want to hold an event showcasing all the achievements and talents of black youth in Leicester. It will be a celebration event.
We will invite young musicians, singers, poets, dancers to perfom at the event. For young people that are intrerested in showcasing their creations we will have an exhibition as well were they can present their designs, art etc. If possible we will also have a small fashion show -mini catwalk.
We will also put profiles around the venue about inspirational young black people.
We are going to invite influential people in Leicester like the Lord Mayor, Councillors for children and young people and young role models like the Members of the Youth Parliament and Youth Council.
We will also show video clips of young successful black people who are known nationally for example Nyasha Matonhodze who is 16 and is the new face of designer label Louise Vuitton. These clips will hopefully inspire the young people in attendance to go for their dreams, despite what they may see as a big barrier, their skin colour.
We want the young people to only go home feeling proud of what they have achieved so far but also feeling motivated that they can achieve a lot more.
What's needed to make it a reality
Well for starters we need more money. We applied for a £2000 grant to the Prince`s Trust but they only managed to give us £1000 as they wanted to fund as many youth projects as possible.
Now we are looking to raise the extra £1000. We tried applying to Think Big again but they refused us as we had another project going.
And because we only have two months to plan this event it`s kind of difficult to apply for other funds as they take a while to come through.
So any ideas of how we can raiase more money would be most appreciated :)

Sounds like another great event you have planned. Sorry to hear you didn't get all the money you wanted from Princes' Trust, but brilliant that you are getting funding.
Have you thought about applying to Live UnLtd. This sounds like the sort of thing they would fund. They only give money to 11-21yr olds so if you're older you could maybe see if someone else in your group could apply for the group? A link to their website is here: http://www.liveunltd.com/
It sounds like you've got it covered in terms of who you want to attend and I think that will definitely draw the crowds in. Are somewhereto_ going to help with venue space?
As always if there is anything we can do to help just let me know :-)
Best of luck,

Sorry but I`m assuming your email alerts are still down. Hadn`t realised that you had been commenting..
Spoke to Live Unltd but for a different project and they said their funding usually takes about 2/3months to come through,
If we can probably push the event to a later date, however this is a bit impossible as most members of the group have exams in Jan, but will see what we can come up with.
However I think we are going to have to push it as I want this event to be the best it can be and I want to sort everything out at least 3 weeks before the event so we can then just concentrate on publicity in the last few week before the event.
And yes somewhereto_ are on board. If they manage to get a space for us then we will have a bit more money for the event itself.Probably going to see a possible venue sometime next week.
Will let you know how it goes :) & Thanks

That makes sense about putting back the project a little bit. Would you be able to hold it towards the end of February at all? That way you'll have plenty of time to set things up before members of the group have exams and then you've still got some time after to push the publicity etc...
Great to hear that somewhereto_ are on board. I have no doubt they'll be able to secure you a great venue :-) You'll have to keep us posted on the venue.
Let us know how it goes.
Good Luck!

It was great meeting you as well :)
Time flies, l know had promised to be here sooner but it just hasn`t been happening, here now :)
And hello Ada,
I have been having a lot of meetings lately with my somewhereto_ coordinatior. She is really excited about this event as well and she is being very helpful.
She has been introducing me to people who are keen to help with the event, even have a free photographer and designer now! Woop!
Unfortunately it looks like we are going to have to postpone this event again. We have been waiting on our funding, so until we actually receive it we can`t do much about it except prepare!
Everything is good to go though. Now just need to re arrange dates to give us enough time to promote the event. We were going to have it during February half term but looks like we might have to do it sort of end March now.
We are having a lot of interest about this and have a few performers lined up already. Kinda working on getting a well known young black celeb on board. Do you have any contacts??
We have the catering sorted, the PA, decorations, etc etc. It`s pretty much sorted (touch wood). Just need to purchase and pay for things now.
Going to officially view the venue with Tina sometime next week. Been there and it`s been recently been refurnbished + it`s a great venue for our event -The Afro-Caribbean Centre!
Now we just need to get vip people to attend and give a few words about how fabulous young people are.
Have also been working tirelessly to get sponsorship from local businesses, it`s really been difficult not gonna lie! But managed to get some sweets for a raffle to Fox`s Confectionary and some shopping vouchers from John Lewis. Still waiting to hear from other businesses -fingers crossed.
More updates coming soon after we have viewed venue :) Report Abuse
Team V is going quite cool at the moment, finished our first campaign on food poverty where we had to collect in 500 food items, managed to collect 410 which we donated to the Salvation Army before xmas, collected in a few more items in the last few days, about 40 and have been promised 70 more items which are coming next week, so would have met my target. Woop! Was very doubtful that I would though.
Going to be in London this weekend for a residential were campaign no.2 will be revealed! So again it1s going to be busy busy busy with campaign 2 pretty soon...x

Just seen all your updates, so you may get loads of replies from me today as I work my way through :-)
Really pleased to hear everything is going well with Rising Stars and great to hear that you've had so much support from different people willing to get involved and lend a hand. somewhereto_ sound like they've been really brilliant :-). That's a real shame you're still waiting on the funding though, hopefully that'll get sorted soon so you can make all of your final preparations. If you need help promoting it once you've got a date sorted etc... just let me know and I'll be happy to put it out through our social media channels. It sounds like it's pretty much ready to go though which is great. The venue, like you say, sounds perfect and couldn't be more perfect really if you tried - should create exactly the atmosphere that you're looking for.
On the contacts front for a young black celebrity, I'm really sorry but I don't.
Good Luck with the rest of the business sponsorship - I can definitely understand what you say about it being tough, but great that you've already managed to get some prizes from some big names. You might be able to send some volunteers out to local small businesses in Leicester like restaurants etc... to see if they can give you any vouchers.
Also on the Teamv front, that sounds brilliant what you've been able to achieve and in a fairly short space of time too. I hope you have a good time on the residential this weekend - I look forward to hearing what the next campaign is :-)

We have finally received some of the funding so we are good to go now. Still waiting on a date to go and view the venue.
All the publicity is ready to go out once that has been sorted. Also been talking to a few young people who are quite interested in perfoming at the event.
Might even get the Children`s Council to support the event by videoing it and doing interviews on the night.
Had meeting with the group and we have sort of decided to give ourselves at least two months to market the event so we are looking at having the event probably around end March begining April depending on when we finally have a date for the event.
Everything going well so far. Have started my Team V second campaign and it`s taking most of my time now. Was ill since the residential and only started working on the campaign this week -l`m one week behind :(. But hopefully will catch up soon.
Will continue to keep you posted on this :). And thanks
Hope your all ok at J49 x Report Abuse
Great to hear that you've got funding and you've got lots of things organised and put in place for the event. Hopefully once you've got the date sorted, you'll be pretty good to know and giving yourselves a couple of months to market it is a really good idea.
Good Luck with your second Team v campaign, I've heard lots about it and a few of the leaders have posted on the site. I hoe you're feeling ok now and I'm sure you'll hit the ground running this week with it all.
Good Luck with it all :-)
