What it's all about

I would like to create awareness for children with disabilities by sharing my experience on a weekly basis with others. By doing this I believe that others may be open minded to also participate in helping children with disabilities. Even if they do not contribute I would simply like to create awareness for those who are less fortunate. I have set up a facebook group, called "Supporting children with disabilities" through which I aim to create awareness.

What's needed to make it a reality

I have a brother who is disabled and I see how mentally frustrating it can get for him sometimes. So sharing my experience I aim to encourage others to supporting children with disabilities making them feel special as they are. Also working for a charity Keen, I see the difference which is made simply by socialising with the children and how happy them seem to be simply by having some sort of company. I want some advice how I can make my approach to this better and more appealing. After a few months, I have intentions to open up my own charity in Croydon for children with disabilities to participate in group activites as well as sports and recreational activities

Welcome to Junction49. I'm Sarah, here to support you in setting up your project.

This is a lovely idea and from all of your experience you sound like the best person to get it going. How is the Facebook group going? If you like, you can post a link on here if you're looking for people to join. If you want to keep it private amongst friends though, then don't worry about making the link public.

You can also use your diary here on Junction49 to post stories of your own/other people's experiences.

To raise a bit more awareness about what you're doing, could you put on an event with support from KEEN and use the event as an opportunity to promote your project and get people to come to the Facebook group to contribute? It could maybe be a fundraiser for the charity, or some family fun day for those who benefit from the support that KEEN provides?

If you wanted to do something like this, we could support you to find funding to cover the cost of putting on an event. Here are a couple of different places you could apply to:

    - O2 Think Big http://www.o2thinkbig.co.uk/
Awards of up to £2500 for your project, given in stages, for projects to improve the community. This is open to 13-25 year olds. In the first round you can apply for £300 and then after you've completed that part of the project you might get invited to apply for £2500.

    - Live UnLtd http://www.liveunltd.com/
Live UnLtd will give up to £5,000 of funding and all the support needed to turn a great idea into a reality. Open to 11-21 yr olds.

Let me know what you think and of course if you have any questions about any of this, then please do just get in contact.

    Sarah :-)

Just read your latest diary entry, that's great news about the post you've applied for. If you get it, it'll be a great way to really get your project off the ground and raise more awareness.

I've just thought about another Junction49 idea from nearly 3 years ago which students in Loughborough ran. It was called Disability Awareness Day http://www.junction49.co.uk/idea/2057/disability_awareness_day_/ It was a huge success and what they did was put on a whole range of activities to get people to learn about different disabilities.

    Good Luck!
