What it's all about

I suffered with depression and for me exercise was a good way of helping to relieve the stress and just have even half an hour where I could be happy without a care in the world. I want to help raise awareness for Mind, a charity for those suffering with mental illnesses. The subject of mental illness is still a taboo and rarely spoken about.
I have an idea of organising a zumba party with possible stalls from sponsors & companies aimed at the atrget auidence of zumba - It's a fun way to exercise get involved as a group *helps the body & mind*

Jo-Anne Brown has asked for help on this idea - Find out how you can help

What's needed to make it a reality

Not too sure whether to just hold a normal one hour class or maybe do a record attempt e.g. largest class in hertfordshire I would like to develop the event from just being a zumba class so there can be a larger participation and get more people to attend.

Welcome to Junction49. I'm Sarah from the Junction49 team here to support you in turning your idea into reality.

Organising a Zumba Party sounds like the perfect way to raise money for charity. I did a bit of Zumba last year and absolutely loved it - it's a brilliant work out and a lot of fun at the same time. It always used to leave me feeling very happy.

From what you've said there are definitely a few different ways that you could run this event:

    1. Organise a Zumba class with a teacher donating their time. You then get all the money raised from charging people for the class.

    2. Organise a Zumbathon (I think Virgin Active did this towards the end of last year in a few locations in London) It's basically a Zumba marathon which you could put on for x no.of hours and you could set rules e.g. there has to be so many people Zumbaing at any one time. Some students from LSE did this a few years ago but with a Lindy Hopathon, you can check it out here: http://www.junction49.co.uk/idea/2356/lse_lindy_hopathon/ With this you would have to get a few Zumba teachers on board and ensure that you have enough participants getting involved throughout the day. You would probably need to make sure that you provide lots of water and some healthy snacks too.

    3. There is a Zumba Wii game which you could use somehow, or if you have any trouble finding a teacher. You would just need a large screen.

With all of this, having stalls from different organisations would work really well particularly local services. If you get in contact with MIND they can send you out some publicity materials to help you organise your event. You could decorate the Zumba room with MIND balloons. http://www.mind.org.uk/get_involved/fundrasing_events/do_your_own_thing

Do you have a venue in mind that you could use? If not you could contact local gyms or community centres to see if they would be willing to support this event. You should also check out www.somewhereto.com which supports young people aged 16-25 to find the space they need to do the things they love.

If you think you might need funding to cover the cost of organising the event e.g. creating posters and flyers, the cost of any refreshments and if needed to pay a Zumba instructor you could apply to O2 Think Big.

    http://www.o2thinkbig.co.uk/
Awards of up to £2500 for your project, given in stages, for projects to improve the community. This is open to 13-25 year olds. In the first round you can apply for £300 and then after you've completed that part of the project you might get invited to apply for £2500.

I hope that helps to get you started and give you some ideas. I'll tweet about your action to find a Zumba instructor and see if anything turns up.

If you have any questions, or need some help or advice with anything then just let me know.

    Best of luck.

    Sarah

I just wanted to check in to see how things were going with your idea? Have you been able to locate any Zumba instructors in your area?

If you need any help getting started just give me a shout.
