What it's all about
L'spire is based on inspiring Leicester's DeMonfort Univeristy students to help new freshers get to know what Leicester's all about. The main aim is to get young people together to discuss any worries or fears about heading to university. We as volunteers want to challenge any concerns they have and instead, help them build new relationships with students who are in exactly the same boat. University is a huge step that will affect them for the rest their lives. By introducing sports to the project will be a great way to help break down any barriers and support young people through the transition. So what better way start volunteering than in a fun and exciting way!

Welcome to Junction49. I'm Sarah from the Junction49 team here to support you in getting your project all set up.
I love this idea and think it's something that all universities should do, but don't. I guess your idea is that it's for students once they start during Fresher's. What you could try and do is see if you're able to advertise it to new students from the end of Aug/beginning of September when they know they're definitely coming to De Montfort. You could create a Facebook group/page where people could post questions about any fears/worries they have in the run up to starting, and then during Fresher's week you could have an event to invite everyone along to, to kickstart it all.
I noticed that at De Montfort they have Fresher's Reps who are on hand during Fresher's week to help new students get settled in. Could you link up with them in some way where you can let them know about L'Aspire and get them to tell people about it during the week?(particularly if there are students who are finding it particularly hard).
Have you been in touch with the volunteering department of your student union? Here's the link: http://www.demontfortstudents.com/volunteering/content/41105/search_opportunities/start_your_own_project/ They offer funding of up to £250 for students starting their own volunteering projects. They might be good to talk to as well with making links with the rest of the university - i.e. link to Fresher's reps, finding out who the right people are to talk to about communicating the project to pre-Fresher's. They will be able to help get the word out for recruiting volunteers too.
Do you think you would be able to get venues within the university to hold your project or will you have to pay? If you're looking for different places in Leicester, get in touch with www.somewhereto.com They can help you to find the space you need to the things you want and have already been great to other Junction49ers who live in the area.
If you want to apply for other funding as well, this is a really good place to apply to:
- O2 Think Big http://www.o2thinkbig.co.uk/
Awards of up to £2500 for your project, given in stages, for projects to improve the community. This is open to 13-25 year olds. In the first round you can apply for £300 and then after you've completed that part of the project you might get invited to apply for £2500.
You never know, depending how it all goes you might find that through L'Aspire people engage with it throughout the whole year and then become volunteers to help new students come the following year.
Also just to let you know I've tweeted about it and will post it on Facebook too.
Best of luck with it. Keep us updated with how it goes and if you have any questions at all, just ask or if you need any help at all.

I just wanted to check in to hear how things were going with your idea. Have you managed to speak to anyone at your university about setting it up?
Would be great to hear how it is all going.
Sarah
P.S. Your idea should appear in a blog post later this week on www.vinspired.com Report Abuse
How are things going with this idea? Did you manage to speak to your student reps. If you're still planning on going ahead with this idea, would be great to hear how it's going. Also, if you need any help at all just let me know.
