What it's all about

There wasnt much going on in the local area for children and young people although we didnt know how much of a needed resource it would be until we began delivering workshops which soon became heavily oversubscribed.

What's needed to make it a reality

Why it was needed

There wasnt much going on in the local area for children and young people although we didnt know how much of a needed resource it would be until we began delivering workshops which soon became heavily oversubscribed.

What's being done

We are a youth run organisation that runs creative projects, workshops and events for children, families and young people, we based in South London in West Norwood.

Aims and Principles:
- Use art and creativity workshops to reach out to all types of young people

- Provide educational as well as fun and enjoyable activities

- Allow young people with the necessary experience to lead workshops and gain transferable skills

- Bridging the gap between local artists and the local community

How it started

Please contact us if you would like to become involved, learn more about Come & Create or start up a similar project, we would be happy to help out.

More

Originally three of us got together and decided we wanted to start an art club for young people in our local area. So we applied to the local YOF (youth Opportunities fund) for £2,300 to run workshops from Jan-March 2007. We got the money and used it to employ local young up and coming artist to be the workshop leaders, alongside young youth leaders. We also brought all the arts materials and promoted the club in the local areas by flyering in schools and community groups. Once we got going the club became very successful and busy and provided a much needed resource for the local community. We then developed into a small organisation with a constitution and all the relevant policies needed.

I am currently doing a theatre design degree in manchester and I a studying buisness and funding at the moment. I would like to know if how you get started in the voluntery and community sector. I would love to start a voluntary scheme, where I enter schools, elderly homes and other social groups to do art. Using a majority voted stimulus or a topic which will be studied in the school, I would like to bring in a sensory box full of different fabrics, paints and materials which can create the art work, be it a painting, a collage, a mini puppet theatre box , anything interative. I have work experience in a childrens hotel holiday club a few years ago and i wanted to look further into the local opportunities there are in my area. I just wondered if you knew where i could look to get started and what funding i would be eligible to get to help with materials costs, look forward to hearing from you soon, E.Long. Report Abuse

That's great to hear that you're interested in starting an arts project in your local area - would you like to post it up as an idea on Junction49 - you'll then have your own page and it'll be easier to keep your ideas separate to the Come and Create project above!

The first step you'll need to take is to decide on which type of people you'd like to work with (limiting yourself to one at least initially I reckon...) - schools, homes for the elderly or social groups. You'll also need to get a CRB check done if you haven't already and you'll be working with children or vulnerable adults - hopefully this can be paid for by how ever you get funding!

Since you are interested in running a local project in your area your best bet might be to apply for local community arts grants - they are much more likely to fund grassroots projects like this. Check out Manchester Youth Arts for some local ideas. Manchester Council don't seem to have any relevant grants available to individuals for community projects but you could contact them to ask their advice on local funding that's available:

Contact: Voluntary Sector Policy and Grants Section
    Email: voluntary.sector.grants@manchester.gov.uk
    Telephone: 0161 234 3016
PO Box 532, Town Hall, Room 3027, Albert Square, Manchester, M60 2LA

Or you could look into applying to local companies for sponsorship in exchange for their name/logo in your materials...?

British Arts provide information and advice about where to get arts funding in the UK.

You could also have a look at the Arts Council grants programme.
